Exercise and feeding question.

Due to a change in my work schedule, I get home right around the time Brody is due to eat dinner. I'd like to walk him when I get home and feed him dinner after our walk. Is it safe to feed him after walking? Or do I need to wait until he's cooled down?

Well, you probably know as much as I do, but I generally feed first then have a walk afterwards. Sometimes we walk first, then feed, but Ben is not a real active walker and seems to do well either way. There's usually at least an hour gap between walk and food, either way.

On the other hand, if Brody is a runner or jumper or plays boisterously with other dogs, that might be a different story. Be interested to hear what others say.

Oh, wait: I just noticed "4 years old and still a spaz" - that changes things!! :roflmao:

Our vet told us to wait an hour - I'm not sure if that was a scientific answer or if there is any link between eating/exercise and bloat but I guess why would you take the chance right?

we always wait an hour before or after feeding ....Bloat scares the heck out of me.
Wow, I didn't know bloat was an issue when feeding after exercise! I've been walking Fergus for an hour after work and dumping kibble in his bowl as soon as we get back. :uhoh2:

My vet printed this out of Surgery of the Digestive System p.355. She just returned from one of Theresa Fossum's symposiums on this subject. Though, I'm confused as to whether she's the author or not. My husband went on this vet visit.
Recommendations for Clients re: bloat
-feed several small meals a day rather than one large meal.
-Avoid stress during feeding (if necessary, separate dogs in multiple
households during feeding.
-Restrict exercise before and after meals (of questionable benefit).
-Do not use an elevated feed bowl.
-Do not breed dogs with a first-degree relative that has a history of gastric dilation-volvulus(GDV).
-For high-risk dogs, consider prophylactic gastropexy.
-Seek veterinary care as soon as signs of bloat are noted.
The water bowl advice makes me laugh. I wish they'd make up their minds.

This is where I'm confused too. I knew no exercising after eating but I wasn't sure of eating AFTER exercise.

I'm a neurotic freak, so I wait 1 hour to feed after any running around, and then wait 1 hour after eating to do any running around. Bloat scares the beans out of me, and I've actually rushed Maggie to the vet thinking she was bloating. She wasn't.

Most of the feedback I've gotten on the subject is wait 2 hours before and after. That's been from vets, breeders, and people I know in the breed for many years. How scientific it is, I can't attest to, but some of these people I have a lot of respect for so I listen. JMHO.
