Hard to believe but Evan is now 11 yr and 9 months. He went to the vet yesterday for a yearly check up and blood work.

He weighed in at a nice 125 lb ( he is a little guy!)

He has mild SAS and his heart sounded fine which was a great relief after our sadness with Decker.

His blood work was all normal except they now do a kidney function test called SDMA which can determine loss of kidney function months or years before the dog is symptomatic. His was slightly high so he goes back for a retest in 3 months at which time if it higher he will need a renal diet but for now he can eat his usual.

So all in all life is OK for him at the moment.

An afterthought, as a retired renal RN I wish this test were available to humans!

Glad to hear the old man is doing so well. The renal test is great. I wonder if it is something to routinely get for older dogs. What do you think?

From what I gathered the test is now part of the routine blood work. I googled it and it doesn't cost any more than the regular blood work which included liver function, hemoglobin, white cell count and renal. Didn't even know it existed until the vet phoned this morning with his results.

Update.
Evan is now 12 years and 2 months and doing OK, this unseasonable snow for Victoria is not helping, have to make sure he doesn't slip, but, in true Newf fashion he would prefer to lie in the middle of a snow bank!! Wont allow him to do that!!

Evan is really slowing down and a bit tottery on his legs, hate to see him like this :( but he eats well and enjoys going for car rides. He will be 12 yr and 4 months on the 9th.

Chase will be 12 tomorrow. I've noticed in the past few days some odd behavior. I had her to the vet and everything checked out OK. I guess it is just aging, which I don't want to see. She does eat well but sometimes she acts like she forgets and I have to take her to her bowl. She still loves to go out in the play yard with all the dogs. At least we both still see positive things in our seniors.

Adam was the youngest of any newf I lost. He was 5 days shy of being 12 1/2. Samantha was the oldest at 14 years 2+ months.
