Do you fast your dog?

Hey guys,

Switched Moose to Orijin six fish. He absolutely LOVES it and hopefully it'll stop his itching (top of his head itches something fierce, and with his back legs losing sensation, he really has to do some acrobatic moves to get his fat paw up there and give it a good scratching).

I was wondering if any of you fast your dogs? I've heard of some that do that around here - fast them one day a week to "reset their system".

Also, found a great place to buy frozen raw marrow bones, and buy raw. It's too expensive to feed raw all the time with a newf but I think if I don't fast him one day a week, I might feed raw one day a week instead. Thoughts?

We wouldn't have a roof left if we tried to fast Thor .......... just sayin' ........ We also mix Orijen with Horizon Legacy (also Canadian).

We fast every once in a while, but I don't think we'd be aloud to do it a full day. Never did it with them as puppies unless we had to.

I personally don't think feeding raw one day a week would be helpful, actually I think that's kinda asking for trouble. I'm sure more with experience will chime in. And if he's on meds that also could create issues, I'd want food in him if he's on meds.

I would never feed Orijen to a growing pup. I know some disagee, but it promotes rapid growth that would only complicated his issues. JMHO

I fed and do feed raw and I did fast one day per week. I should add that I did not fast until Timber was about 18 months old and I gave her a marrow bone instead of her supper, one day per week. I did that until she was about 6 years old. I do not fast River at all and she is still fed a homemade diet - less raw than I use to do. I'm not so sure anymore about what is the best diet to give. I know of other's who have done the raw/kibble combo without any digestive upset - maybe it just depends on your dog? you'll know if it doesn't agree with them.
all the best with whatever you decide to try.

Personally, I would rather see you feed a little raw more frequently than only once a week. I think once a week would tax their system more than a little more often. I feed kibble and raw. I've seen a huge change in skin and coat just by adding raw along with a good quality kibble. They also eat less kibble by their own choice. Raw is so much more satisfying for them They tend to not feel the need to eat so much, at least that's been the experience I've had.

I used to have a fast day for my dogs, until Katy......katy got very distressed on fast days and we were worried about anxiety bloat. I know we were weak. So now we feed about 90% RAW. the other bit is when we are travelling. It has just been to difficult when we travel.
So now they get a non preservative/color/wheat kibble with sardines/eggs when we are on the road. or we buy them RAW meat for dinner and they have kibble at night. We found it too difficult to carry all their RAW for the days we spent away from home :)

Interesting, what do you feed? Why does the adult Orijen promote rapid growth moreso than the other brands?

Thanks to all for the opinions! I think we'll skip on fasting while he's growing and then re-evaluate later on.

With regard to infrequent raw feeding, I would think it's more "dog dependent". I occasionally feed Mila raw. Very occasionally. Think a few times a year. She does fine. Other dogs might not do as well as she does and would need more regualr raw feedings, lest they get the dire rear. Just food for thought.

With the orijen the calcium/phosphorus rates are higher.
However look at some of Peter Maniates threads as l know he feeds good quality protein but less of it.

We give raw meals every so often when we can , make sure there is a good break between kibble and raw though and we give raw bones

Other Meats/Protiens:

They also get a Turkey Neck daily around lunchtime.

They get this 6 X a week.

On Fasting Day they get:

They eat no meat on that day at all. Food is snarfed meat or meatless equally.

Remember one thing dogs digest kibble at a different rate than they do Raw.

A couple of years back I priced local raw against Orijen for my 2 Newfs and the price was not that different. Can you look for a local co-op group or some other way to get him onto raw more often than one day/week?

Like many others my dogs would eat the house if we fasted them.
