Cimorene sick

Please send some prayers and healing thoughts this way...

As I've mentioned recently, Cimorene is in season again, 9 1/2 weeks after her first one. This past Friday, when we got her out of her crate in the am, there was an AWFUL smell and a very small puddle of clear-ish liquid with matted fur in it. I'm guessing she hacked up some fur from where she's been cleaning herself down there. The entire house WREAKED though.

Today, again when we got her out of her crate in the am, she had had diarrhea...dark, puddles and piles all over her crate, the wall, etc. She was huddled in the corner looking horrified and embarrassed. She wasn't interested in her food and I figured she probably shouldn't eat anyway, so we tossed it. She's been only taking a few tiny drinks throughout the day. She still has her full energy though, running through the yard...although while in season, she's running around frantic, carrying her toy from one end of the yard, leaving it, running back to get it and carrying it to the other end...over and over. Just gave her a big bath. She pooped a bit ago and it was soft and somewhat green.

Watching symptoms...hoping she's just not feeling well. I've read up on symptoms of pyo and bloat so that I know some things to watch for.

Has the Vet checked her for Pyo? Has she been to the Vet yet? You might want to get her in there tomorrow.

Also, while she has or is reconvering from diarrhea, it's best if you feed her only rice and some chicken breast. No skin, no seasoning. You can also try some cottage cheese. These are all bland foods. When it's time for him to start eating again, you might want to start on these foods then gradually get her back to her regular meals.

I wouldn't feed her anything for at least 12 hrs. 24 would be better. Her system needs to rest and reset.

Oh...and pumpkin from a can. No pie mix...just plain pumpkin.

And, you can use Immodium. Not sure of the dose, tho.

Donna -- I haven't taken her to the vet since she didn't have any overly odd symptoms from the lists I've read. I talked with my breeder on Friday after the water/hairball finding and she didn't seem too concerned. Thought she probably just hacked up some hair from cleaning herself. I did leave a msg about her diarrhea...I'll call again and see what she thinks.

I've been debating taking her to the vet just to get checked anyway. She hasn't been in since probably last fall since she's finished with vaccines and hasn't been sick.

Do you see anything in my description that could imply pyo? I've read many sites about it but didn't think it sounded like what she's doing.

Not really...but her symptoms seem to be varied, so I'd take her in and have her checked out. Just to be on the safe side.

The awful smell would make me very suspicious of Pyo which is something you don't want to mess with. My recommendation would be a vet visit ASAP. Going off her food is reason enough...

Thanks Donna.

I might take her in tomorrow. Although I loath having to hear the pro-spay speech. I'm not planning to spay until 2 years or longer on the advice of my breeder and all that I've read here. However, I don't care to debate...I trust the many breeders of Newfs over the vet and don't care to get into it. Maybe I should just say that...

Or maybe I should just say that I'm considering showing her. Would that just end the conversation?

Thanks Ginny. I forgot to mention that the smell was coming from her spit up. I smelled her all over and it wasn't coming from her vulva area. It seemed to be on her front paws and the fur down her neck/chest...as if it got on there when she hacked up the fur.

I'm leaning toward calling the vet tomorrow for a checkup.

IMHO, I am not a breeder, but, if she has pyo and they talk about spaying her then I think you should do that. Even if she isn't 2 yrs old she can survive very well by being spayed!
My first female was spayed at 6 mths, that was before internet, NN etc and she lived to be 12 yr with no problems.

The comming right back into season would be something I would be concerned about. Something wrong there.

If I had a dog with Pyo and had to hear the "spay now" speech...I'd listen. There are two types of pyo...open and closed. Open, you see discharge, licking, etc. Closed you don't. Pyo is very dangerous, and I suspect your breeder would agree with spaying if Cimorene happened to have pyo. And I certainly hope she doesn't.

I'm with you on the waiting to spay until they're older, in general terms. Mine were older when they got spayed (Molly and Mira were both 5 yrs old), but I was always very concerned about the possibility of Pyo, which does exist with an intact bitch.

We did have one Lab get Pyo years ago at the age of 6 yrs. She was spayed right then, and lived to be 17, and died of old age/natural causes. No cancer, nothing.

Have you taken her temp? Her symptoms can be caused from varied things, but with several different incidents happening all within a short period of time, I'm glad you're planning on having her check out by the Vet.

I really hope Cimorene gets better soon. It's so scary when you know something might be wrong. Good thoughts from here!

Thanks everyone. If she were to have pyo, then yes, we'd have to decide about whether to spay. (I meant talking about spaying her just because she's over 6 months which is what they believe in.) My breeder thinks her back to back heats are a split-heat in which her first was not a real one.

I think I'll likely take her in tomorrow to get checked.

You could be dealing with two different problems. Her short cycling should be addressed but does not mean she has pyo. Just tell your vet you are not spaying her now. The diarrhea could be a bacterial infection that can be cleared up in a few days with meds.

Thank you! This is my thought. I really don't see any signs of pyo but will have it checked just to be sure since it is so serious. I'm not a reactionary type and do think they will add the thought of pyo (if she doesn't have it) as yet another reason all dogs should be spayed at 6 mos as a scare tactic...oh well, as you said, I'll just tell them I'm not doing it now. As you said, short-cycling doesn't mean pyo...pyo can occur more often with short cycling simply because there is more opportunity.

I'll certainly post back once she's been checked or if anything else occurs in the meantime. She's acting fine...still being playful and frisky.

Hope all turns out OK for Cimorene Sharon.
You're in good hands here (as you already know.)

Good thoughts from here and waiting to read an update tomorrow!

Thanks Debra and Sharon.

Kilrain -- Cimorene said that we should meet someday for a playdate! She misses romping with you!

If your vet is that insistent about spaying and won't listen to you or your reasons for wanting to wait, you may want to look for another vet. I avoid those vets who won't listen to their clients. Good luck with her and do keep us informed.
