Best tool for thinning shoulder area?

Fargo has obscenely thick fur on his shoulders, chest and neck - no undercoat to speak of there just thick fur. It's already super hot here and he's miserable. I've used the MCK to thin out his back end where he still had a lot of undercoat. Should I use it to thin out the other areas too? Is there a better tool for that job?

I'd try the MCK first. If that is not satisfactory then use some thinning shears. Lay the shears on the skin vertically from the ground UP and snip. Be sure before you snip that you cannot see the tips of the shears. If you do you will see a mark. Snip and comb, snip and comb. You have to comb after at least every 2-3 snips to see what you have thinned.

I did EXACTLY what Jeannie said above the other day on Gabe. He had a lion's mane growing. The thinning shears worked wonders but seriously you have to follow what Jeannie says above or you will get a hack job.

Also, I don't use the MCK on the hind end. I find it breaks the hairs and they are already coarse back there on the butt and back of the thighs. At the National this year I bought a long tooth comb (wide tooth) with a handle...looks kind of like a rake...and I comb through the Yak Butt that way...it works much better. When I used the MCK back there it did more damage than good.

OK so now I am getting a big head. Seriously I am glad everyone is pleased with the DVD and the newfs are getting the attention they need. This board should have the best groomed newfs of any board on the net!

Jeannie -- How do I get one of the dvds?? We will be bringing our 11 week old puppy home next week and I would love a video. I saw in the sticky about sending a check but is this still accurate since it's been quite a while?? Thanks!!!

I've found that a chain saw is far quicker than thinning shears. You just have to comb after each whack with the saw!

In Fargo's case a chain saw, weed whacker or bush hog might actually be the tool of choice. The boy has some serious fur there!

I bought Jeannies video tape a long time ago and have not been able to watch it. I only have a dvd player these days. Jeannie do I have to buy it over again to get the DVD?

How true. Any random 3 year old with scissors would proably also do a bang up job....
Anybody every notice how 3 year olds with scissors seem to able able to deftly remove all their bangs in the blink of an eye :)

I think Sandie remembers. Didn't little Emma give herself a trim recently? :)
