bad night -> big day

Well this week I made some rookie mistakes, leaving my newborn's diapers in a bag on the floor and heading out to run a quick errand. We came home (on Sunday evening) to find diapers torn up all over the living room/couches (actually, our landlord was installing a new washing machine, so HE came to our house to find this mess...before we did). Gilly, I'm sure, had the time of her life, as she LOVES tearing things up plus these had delicious human baby poop in them. Monday she poops out a bunch of diaper beads and is none the wiser that she did anything bad, and she's feeling fine. Then, Tuesday I go out again and this time she gets into the bathroom garbage (which is a small open-top can, and she has always had "access" to it and NEVER taken anything out of it. Well she got into it and had more "fun" tearing things up and feeling fine until yesterday afternoon when she started throwing up. She was still eating and drinking and energy level same as usual so I thought maybe something she ingested had just given her an upset tummy. What a tiring night, between feeding a newborn every 2-3 hours and cleaining up dog barf in between (i washed my hands, don't worry). She continued to throw up every few hours until this morning when she first refused cheese, but then happily ate her breakfast then threw that up too. We were scheduled to have her spayed tomorrow (Friday) but with her throwing up I decided to take her in today. So after x-rays, sure enough there is something in her stomach that hasn't been pooped out or thrown up. So spay has been moved to this afternoon, along with removal of the "obstruction" and a gastropexy. *Sigh* Oh Gilly. This doesn't leave me feeling like a very good dog mum, and a very tired human mum. In my defense though, she has been getting her walks and lots of attention, but still probably less than before her baby furless brother came along. Please keep her (and me!) in your thoughts/prayers for her big surgical day today.

Well it is a good thing you could get everything done at once. She will come through fine. She may be feeling a little jealous of the baby. So this might be a good time to crate her when you are out or are busy with the baby. It will keep her safe and give you some peace of mind too.

You have alot on your plate. Protect your sleep at all costs. Everything looks better when you've got enough sleep.

Wow...what a fun time you are having at your house! LOL...really, make sure you do crate her when you need to go out or just so you can get a nap in when the baby is napping. The CRATE is your friend, as is Gilly's. I hope she handled the surgery well as I imagine she did. Good time to use the crate as she will be droggy. I do not envy you with a puppy and a newborn but the joys that lie ahead will be priceless. Congratulations again...beautiful baby!

Oh no! What a naughty girl! At least you can get everything taken care of at once.

I'm sure she'll come through with flying colors! Good luck with everything and the new baby!!!

First congrats on your newborn! I remember how tiring those night feedings were. Made me nuts but they didn't last long. I am sure Gilly came through her surgery great. I agree that crate rest for her and for you is a good idea. Sounds like you've had quite the time with Gilly lately ;) been there too. Hang in there you're doing a great job!

Okay. I didn't know about this! Here's my take. The first 3-4 months are very hard for everyone, even the pup. Though Mila was a good deal younger than Gilly when Ro came around, Gilly seems to be a higher energy Newf so maybe she and Mila were matched in energy levels at these slightly disparate ages.

Maybe doggy playdates or doggy day care might be in order, at least a few days a week during these first difficult months? Something to fulfill her needs and give you a much needed break and maybe curb the destruction?

Also, I am so so sorry. I hate that you're having to deal with all of this at this time :( As if you don't have enough on your plate already....

Oh poor Gilly, and poor you. :( She will be in my thoughts and the silver lining is you had this scheduled regardless, so no extra anesthesia and sugery needed. Wishes Gilly luck and sending lots of love and licks...

Oh hey congratulations on your new little one! And Gilly - ewww. Baby poo? Though the dad of a baby I nannied for in grad school once commented that bf baby poo could be spread on toast. Double ewww. ;)

I think Gilly needs a return to the crate or a very secure pen/small rOom where she can be safe. Let's face it when you are feeding every 2-3 hours you are not going to remember to latch and lock up every last thing so give yourself a break and secure Gilly.

I'm sorry about the emergency surgery but great timing, really, and I'm sure she'll be fine. :)

I didn't think of the crate, since she's been a crate hater for quite some time now, but its probably a good idea at least for the first days after her surgery. Thanks everyone! School starts here in about two weeks and my SIL will then be able to come during the day with her dogs for some walks and play time, with the cooler weather and after Gilly's recovery period. Hopefully that will help with this baby transition and any extra destructive energy my fur toddler has.

I can just imagine your landlord's face when he came into a poop-smeared room, little Miss Gilly sitting there with a "sh!t-eating" grin on her face. :D I hope the surgeries all go (went?) well and that Gilly is feeling better soon and decides to stay out of trouble.

Deep breaths.. in, out, in, out. This too shall pass. So sorry you've had this drama added to your life right now. So glad you're able to get it all fixed. Whew! What a day. Hugs and healing thoughts for Gilly with her surgery.

First - Sorry but.............Blahhahahahahahahahahaha.......................Ok now that's over. Glad everyones OK, hope everything goes well. Yes crating or x-pen or something to keep her confined and relaxed is a good idea. Fingers and paws crossed for a good outcome (snicker). Sorry.....

Had a call from the vet last night and all went well with Gilly. I'll be picking her up early this afternoon. As much as I've been enjoying some time with just my wee one to take care of and to sleep a bit more, I miss my Gilly girl. It's hard when one of my babies is away.
