Back from Germany

Hi All,
Just trying to catch up on some of the threads since I got back from Germany. The trip was good until we got to Berlin. The students stayed with German gymnsium students for 2 weeks and we all had a blast. But sightseeing in Berlin with 20 high school students, who have been staying up late and are still trying to get all their Math homework done, can be very trying. To top it off, the weather was horrible in Berlin - cold, drizzly, sleety, gray, with snow on the ground.
Things in Germany, at least the state I was in, are as bad, if not worse than here. The school system in that state cannot afford supplies for any science labs or any major maintaince projects in the schools. They can only afford routine maintaince and my students were surprised at how dirty the school was. One of the teachers in the German school stated, in front of my students, that the US is responsible for the global economic crisis. My German friend is furious about this statment and will be taking care of it. My friend also has money invested with Deutsche Bank and is having all kinds of problems with them. She wants to get her money out of that bank and cannot. Then to top off the whole 19 day trip, we got to the airport on Tuesday morning and the ground crews were on strike until 11 AM for an 8% pay raise! My German friends had told me not to worry that the ground crews had struck last week and wouldn't do it again. Needless to say, our original flight was canceled, we missed our connecting flight, missed the second possible connecting flight, had to fly to Toronto, and finally got into Philadelphia 7 hours late. Over half of the kids were sick on the plane and were home sick after we got home and the other teacher with me is also sick. My bag is still somewhere between here and Toronto (it was finally found in the Toronto airport on Friday and was supposed to be delivered yesterday! No such luck!). And I'm supposed to do this again in 2 years! I almost kissed the ground when we got off the plane in Philly!

Oh Suzanne! So sorry to hear about the problems at the airport. You should have called. You could have stayed with us...OUR HOUSE IS BIG ENOUGH...trust me. I totally can understand what you are saying about the German thinking as far as the recession. We have had several demonstrations here in K-town dealing with just that. I guess we had better weather on our side of the country. :whistling:

Well if you are going to do this again in 2 years...we may or may not be here. I'm still working on getting an extension, otherwise we are scheduled to leave in May 2010.

Enjoy home, and get some much needed rest.

Well, isn't it? ~snark~ That particular mindset is so idiotic and dangerous.:icon_stupid:

Glad you and the kids are home safely. I can imagine how frustrated everyone was. Sounds like you held everything together though. Good job!!
Despite all the negatives I'll bet there are some good stories to be told yes? :bear: I look forward to hearing some when you settle in.

Glad to hear you back safe and sound. Hopefully things will get better until your next trip.
<vent>Hmm... on the blame the US senario- guess it is easier to blame someone else than to look at yourself and the real reason for the problems. That rings true with both the economy here and with the other countries. It does irritate me that all of these other countries use us as the scape goat... but as soon as they get in trouble.. who do they call?

Didn't most of us blame Mom and Dad when we were kids? We are in effect the parent and they the children. Not that they would look at it that way. It's part of the general group think these days. It's always someone else's fault. Here it's the banks, Wall Street, mortgage brokers, greedy businessmen etc. It's not the family who overloaded their credit card, bought a house too big. It's not the investor who tried for something obviously too good to be true. It's not the one who followed the heard rather than duing their own due diligence. It's not the union worker whose wages and benefits have driven costs way up, it's ALWAYS someone else fault. Bull....... Europe in general has been p----- since the end of WWII that we are the most powerful and they are not. We'll probably feel the same way when someone else is on top. Try to make like a duck, difficult as that is. My Dad had an old saying he got from somewhere

"Convince a man against his will
He is of the same opinion still"

If they are not interested in an open honest exchange of ideas you're just wasting your breath. Hard not to though. Glad you survived all the difficulties intact and think of the unintended education the kids got. That's why travel is so good for learning.

Too bad, I loved Germany. But we were mostly in Bavaria, and Southwest Germany. Loved it and the people. Remember, There's always idiots everywhere, the US does not have a Patent on them.

The main thing was that the kids had a great time. They loved their partners and really enjoyed all the freedom that they had in Germany with the public transportation. Many of them are already either planning to go back or have their partners visit them here. I'm already in a better mood about the whole trip, especially since my suitcase arrived at 2 AM this morning! Everything made it, including the 2 bottle of really potent Schnapps for my husband!
