Adopting Young Adult Newfies

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum (although I've become a very active member in the past few days - its addicting!) and I'm currently finishing up my senior year at the University of Michigan. Having raised 2 Newfies with my family in Chicago, they have, as I'm sure you can all guess, become my life.

Anyways, I am going off to law school next year (location remains undetermined but most likely will either be Boston or CA) and I will finally be at a point in my life where I can get an apartment by myself and adopt a Newfie. I know that law school is a huge commitment, but I cannot imagine spending another 3 years without a dog by my side. Thus, I am planning on adopting a 1 or 2 year old Newf from a rescue and I want to gather as much information as I can in advance so when the summer rolls around & the adoption can take place, I will be able to provide the best home & life I can for my future friend. I'm envisioning lots of cuddles on the couch & bed, long walks & toys, but I also have to think about the more serious stuff too ;)

Is there any advice you guys can give me as to rescue organizations I should contact or steps I should take to prepare? I know its 6 months away but the excitement is building & I want to be the very best future mom I can, and while I have raised 2 Newfs with my family in Chicago, this will be the first time raising one on my own :)

Just a thought...
Then you might want to consider an older Newf of 5-7 years old, so it can finish raising you instead of you raising it. Then once things are settled and law school is over, you can get a puppy or adolescent who will require more of your time than an older Newfoundland will while you are in school. ;)

a friend of mine took her Newf to grad school with her and he (or was it a she?) went to classes too. They had a long, happy life together. Check the CA or NCNE websites for the regional rescue folks. The ones in New England are wonderful.

(signed me in MA )

Haha I like your thinking... trust me, the dog will want more alone time than I'll give him ;)

If you end up in Boston, I'm involved with Newf Rescue of New England and will gladly hook you up!

Whoever you decide to join your life, since you know Newfies you know to include him/her in as much as possible. Best of luck in your search, it is wonderful that you choose to rescue and PLEASE post plenty of pictures. Thank you!!!

Wow, that means a lot to me!! That would be incredible... I might be out there to visit the school over the next two months, maybe I could stop by? Otherwise I'll definitely keep in touch :)

I'm actually in Newport, RI, not Boston (about 1.5 hrs away), unless you're considering Roger Williams - that's just down the road!

Oops - still learning my New England geography! ;) I'm looking @ Boston University... If I'm out there for a long weekend I'll let you know, it's definitely worth the drive! How could I get involved with the organization as a volunteer/What is the adoption process like?

Thanks so much for all of your help!

I think this is a great idea!!

I adopted a 7 year old from rescue 3 years ago and she is the perfect blend of spunk and sleep!
