Yelping when going into a down

Brody the Newf

Brody has me scratching my head yet again. When he goes to lie down, he's been either yelping or going down slowly. I can't figure out what is wrong with him. He still races around the yard, walks fine, is interested in playing, eating and getting belly scratches. I can touch all parts of his body without him showing signs of pain. I've checked for mats, for burrs or thorns and he's clean. He has no scratches, no hot spots and no bumps.

Newf experts HELP please.

Could be anything from a pinched nerve, a pulled muscle to a partial torn cruciate that only hurts when he moves a certain way. Slowely take your hands over his body and feel for tightness, or heat in certain areas. Newfs being very stoic, many times won't show us the pain, but sometimes you can feel inflamation when comparing one joint to another with your hands.

You also might want to test him for Lyme disease, I have a guy that had the exact same issue and it was Lyme (again).

Sorry to hear about Brody....Even though Roger has 2 torn cruciate's, you don't hear a peep out of him as far as complaining. In fact I was the one who said "OWE" when he was being examined...It looked so uncomfortable how he was examining his knees..

My Samantha use to do that. I was concerned but nothing was wrong. I realized she didn't WANT to go into a down and barked to 'talk back' to me and/or went into a slow down. She is a chow-hound and when I asked her to do a down when I had a treat it was 'right now' without any barking or slowness.

I also trained her to roll over and play dead. She would ALWAYS bark before doing either. I changed my command to "bark and die" or "bark and roll over" the kids thought it was great but really she was back talking me.

My Samantha has always been the strong minded newf - determined to not do anything unless there was something in it for her.

Marley was doing some yelping a few months ago. It lasted for maybe 5 days. One second he'd be running around like an idiot, the next he'd let out a yelp. I did take him to the vet after the first few days and the verdict was a pinched nerve. It's cleared up on it's own, thankfully.

Hope Brody is alright.

I should have clarified but I never know if it's lie, lay, laid, etc. so I said "down". Brody was yelping when he went to lay (?) down on his own. He's back talked me during the command but this is different.

I just can't help myself, I posted here and then rushed him to the vet. Brody tested positive for Lyme (AGAIN!) so I'm hoping that is it. The vet tested his front legs and Brody yelped when his joints were being moved. Keep your fingers crossed that all will be well.

I have to say that Brody was amazing. They had trouble drawing blood and he needed to be stabbed a few times. Brody just sat there while one person held him. Not even a tiny struggle even though he was in pain. When the vet did a thorough examination of his joints, Brody cooperated and gave kisses. I kept on hearing how well trained he is:). I'm really so proud of my boy. He's come such a long way.

I have gotten to the point where I keep a months supply of Doxy on hand, whenever my guys show signs of Lyme I start them on it right away. If their symptoms don't improve within two days they go to the vet. They wear preventic collars and are frontlined on a monthly basis but it's still an ongoing battle. I hope Brody is back to normal within a day or two.

I was totally going to say Lymes - I'm sorry it came back to get him but hope that's all that's wrong and that medication can kick it again. And WAY TO GO for how well behaved he was!!!! I'm not surprised - you've been just as stoic as a newf, working with him! WHOOOOOOOO Brody! Feel better.

I'm sorry to hear about the Lyme Disease, but happy you got an answer. I've never met Brody, but he sure sounds like an awesome dog! I had a dog that got very aggressive when she was in pain, and kissing the vet was the LAST thing she wanted to do.........more like EAT the vet!

Good boy Brody, and job well done Heidi!!
