Wierd after being left at kennels

Hi,

We left Edward for 2 days at a new kennel (lots of space and other friendly dogs). We picked him up this morning, he's obviously exhausted, but also has been behaving a bit strangely. He peed in his sleep a little bit, which he's never done before - do you think he was just too tired to realise? He is refusing to pee in the yard, when we tell him to he sits down and has a scratch or a yawn. This might be just coincidence as we've just had the yard redone and he was already being reluctant to pee out there. We took him on a very short walk and he did pee on the walk a few times.
He also usually drinks gallons of water, it's about 90 degrees now, but when I offered him some he flinched away from me - this is something he's never done before. I've been trying to offer him water throughout the day, he has now drunk some but not much. Should I be worried he's getting dehydrated - what should I look out for apart from bright yellow pee?
Thanks for any advice - I'm just worried about him because he doesn't seem quite himself today... He's my baby!

I would definitely take him to the vets if I were you. Maybe he has a urinary tract infection and is avoiding drinking so he won't have to pee. It's less common in the male dogs but not out of the question.

No matter what, he needs to keep hydrated. That is definitely a cause for concern.

If you can, try to afix a plastic or styrofoam cup of some sort to a long stick or dowel rod and catch some of the urine when he does pee. See if it is cloudy or if there is any blood in it.

I agree with Sue about the urinary infection though I was under the impression it was actually quite common in male dogs and especially common in male cats (been there a few times). That would explain the peeing in his sleep. The only other thing that I would question is whether the boarding place was very strict about where they let the dogs pee and now he's afraid to pee in your lawn. Still check with the vet first. Also is he straining to pee or crying when peeing? Is that blood in his pee?

Thanks for the responses. He has drunk a lot during the night, and this morning. But strangely he won't drink if I am standing right next to the bowl - he backs away from it. So now I'm wondering if he was smacked. As I am typing this I just heard him be sick. I'll investigate....

Oh my, I hope Edward will be fine and that nothing bad happened to him at the kennel. Sending prayers and hugs that he is OK.

I hate to say this (I'm in petcare) but it sounds like he may have been traumatized. I hope not but I have a sick feeling about this. There are a lot of really good people in the bus but also a lot of equally bad people. I hope he's okay. I'm sure you won't use that kennel again.

I would also get on the phone with the kennel and ask specifically about their procedures for water and going to the bathroom. We have an outside play area, all concrete, that they do their business on. The water bowls are also out there. Could be something happened to him there, I hope not. Also ask if anything at all happened with Edward. Even if it's small to them it could have bothered him enough. Hope all is well soon.

Thanks everyone. He's been drinking a bit more, and has eaten fine last night and this morning, and seems more himself, though still no peeing in the yard. I am taking him to the vet later on so they can check him out. I will give the kennels a call later on, but how much I'll get out of them who knows.
Don't you just wish they could talk sometimes?!

I hope Edward is just a little stressed, but I agree with Susan that it sounds like he went thru something traumatic (at least according to him). I wish they could talk!

Edward saw the vet this morning, he's fine, I was all worried for nothing (thank goodness!)! She didn't think he was badly dehydtrated, and no sign of a UTI, no pains in his stomach, normal temperature and heart rate. I just have to keep an eye on him to make sure he keeps drinking and no more vomiting. I bought spray for the garden that should encourage him to go toilet out there.
I think he probably got told off for hogging all the water and peeing in the wrong place. Hopefully he's be his normal self in a few days.
Thanks everyone!

We once boarded our first Newf Sooty. I'll never, ever, do that again. Harley and I have never been apart for more than a half hour when I go into the supermarket. If I'm invited somewhere and Harley can't go, then I don't go.
