Which beach should we visit in New Jersey tomorrow?

So we finally made it to New Jersey! We've been here three weeks and I don't know why people think no one is friendly on the east coast.
Honestly, I think it's Suki who is making the friends! lol.

When we drove out, our car had temporary tags because we hadn't been able to get our CO license plates before we left. Naturally, getting New Jersey plates for the car was not a simple process. And of course, our tags expired right after we got here. But yesterday we finally got out plates and can legally drive on the roads again! So we are ready to take a trip to the beach!!!!!!! My kids have never been to the Atlantic Ocean and neither has Suki (Suki has never been to any ocean)!!! They have seen the Pacific and the Indian oceans, I think (it's hard to tell exactly where one ocean stops and another begins!).

So can you guys recommend which beach we should visit? We are coming from around Morristown, and I think we could drive up to 2 hours. We are just doing a day trip. But Suki has to be allowed on the beach and it should be safe for the kids to go in the water also. And we'll need there to be someplace to get something to eat also. That doesn't have to be right at the beach though. I've looked online, but I'm getting confused about if dogs really are allowed and it's hard to tell what a good choice really is. But I figured you guys will know the best!

Also, is there anything special we need to bring? I know towels and changes of clothes for the kids and bags for poop clean ups. The movers haven't arrived yet with any of our stuff, so what I have is very limited (I think I only have enough towels for everyone to have one! lol). And I don't have my dryer yet, so will Suki ever air dry on her own? It is so humid here compared to Colorado, I kind of think I don't ever dry, really .... And can I just let Suki off leash? She is good at staying near us, but she does not have a rock solid recall. I didn't bring my long lead and only have the short one. Do you think she would just swim out to sea and never come back?

Thanks for your help!!!!

I think it's supposed to rain all day today..but tomorrow is supposed to be nice :) I think and don't want to promise but I think all dogs leashed can go on the beach after Labor Day. It's windy today, so I'm sure she would dry on her own. Very strong under toe right now be very careful if you let her in and she's not used to the ocean....I'd check for low tide. If you come down this way pm me!

Two of my favorite beaches: Sea Girt. It's beautiful and North on the coast lots of victorian style B&Bs, I also love Long Beach Island. There is a bay side for Suki to swim in if it is too rough in the ocean. LBI is a great place to spend a weekend with the girls. It's very family friendly. Lots to do, a little amusement park. Sandy hook has a bay and a beach side. It might be a good stop to make especially if it's rough. That is also north on the coast. In fact you can see NYC from the beaches on Sandy Hook. Point Pleasant has a nice boardwalk (not sure how much is open after labor day).

I took a trip here with Bojie quite a few times. It's a state park so it's not a typical "NJ beach" but it's beautiful and Boj had a blast and we had a nice picnic:
Best: Pet-Friendly Beaches
Island Beach State Park
Exit 82
Island Beach is for lovers of animals, both wild and domestic. One of the few undeveloped barrier beaches on the north Atlantic Coast, it is home to a large osprey colony, as well as red fox, blue herons, peregrine falcons and more than 400 species of plants. Man’s best friend also is welcome in designated areas of the park’s sandy beaches, as long as he or she is leashed (maximum length six feet). Dog-friendly areas are the non-swimming beaches located approximately five miles into the park, after Swimming Area #2. Most visitors with four-legged friends pack picnic lunches. Located near the entrance to the park, Ebby’s Café Alfresco is a popular pit stop for a giant sub or specialty sandwich. Check in with the park office before bringing your furry pal, as there are certain times of the year when birds nest and dogs are prohibited.

You guys will have a blast wherever you go. Don't go to Seaside unless you want to be featured in an episode of "Jersey Shore". That's where it's filmed;-)

Point Pleasant won't let you on the beach even in off season... Manasquan has a dog beach as does Asbury Park. Asbury Park also has Yappy Hour where dogs can hang out at the Wonder Bar with you on Thursdays and Saturdays. Also in Sandy Hook, there is an unofficial dog beach, called "HorseShoe Cove" As for just a day at the beach, LBI is great and I love Pier Village at Long Branch... Seven Presidents Beach is also very nice. In long Branch there are lots of little shops including a dg shop right in Pier Village that Suki can "go browsing" There are also some outside seating areas. As for Seaside, yes there are some not so classy places, there is a difference between Seaside Park and Seaside Heights. Island Beach State Park is very nice and clean and it is located in Seaside Park. Heights is where Snooki hangs out!! lol
Since its after season, you shouldn't have a problem taking Suki to any of these. Have fun! Take lots of pics and let us know how it went!!

Next summer we should have a Jersey Newf meetup! I'd love to meet everyone all at once, and it would be great socialization for all the dogs, I would think.

If this is not already a tradition, maybe we should make it one?

We have done this a few times... Mike (newfie) has a place in Lavalette that we go to! Here is one of our trips.. Each time we seem to get more and more dogs involved! :) We can't wait for you and others to join! This was our very first meeting!

Bay Head, Mantoloking allow dogs leashed off season, so does Mansaquan, they are nice beaches; I live in Point Pleasant Beach, & they will even write up residents in the off season; My vacation property is 8 miles south from PPB in Ocean Beach Shores, during the season you can bring you dogs up to the beach off-hours, but they must be leashed, off-season anything goes, remember this house is in the Toms River portion of Lavallette, as Lavallette itself does not let dogs on the beach at any time, but you can walk them on their boardwalk off-season. When we have another get together in Ocean Beach, you have to come, its a blast, & it is a clean private ocean beach, my Tiki is up there on a regular basis, that is why the inside of my truck is a sandbox ( shouldn't have bought the upscale package).http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/8725.html

Thank you all for the suggestions! We will make our way through the suggestions and give them all a try! My husband decided on going to the designated dog beach near Point Pleasant. It is on the cove/bay side, which I thought was safer since I don't know how strong of a swimmer Suki is nor how rough the waves can be. Suki loved the water and the other dogs. I hope we can find a place to go off leash also because keeping her on leash while swimming and trying to play with the other dogs was tricky! This was only the second time we have taken Suki to swim and she's a natural! She took right to swimming and wasn't phased at all.

After swimming we walked to a restaurant and got a patio table right next to the fence so Suki was still with us while we ate. I wish more places could let dogs on the patio. After eating, my husband took the kids to the beach on the ocean side. Dogs weren't even allowed on the boardwalk there, so Suki and I sat in the shade near the boardwalk and listened to the waves pound. Suki made a lot of friends as only a few people can resist saying hello to a Newf! The kids LOVED the ocean and getting knocked about by the waves.

Suki did get some diarrhea shortly after she went swimming. Could she have gotten it from drinking a little salt water? It was her first time in salt water, but it came on as we were leaving the dog beach, which I thought seemed so fast. But everything was back to nice and solid normal by the next day.

I will post pictures as soon as I can find the cord that connects my camera to the computer. The movers arrived yesterday and there are sooooo many boxes. It's going to take a while.

Thank you all!

Yes.....that's likely the cause. Glad she had a great time!

Oh shoot....I'm so sorry I didn't mention that with the salt water.....it's bad, and yes it goes right threw them. Zeke likes to drink it, so I'm always yelling at him. Our first beach outting we had to stay an extra few hours cause it did not stop from both ends! That's the dog beach we used to go to every Labor Day, 10 minutes away from us. Last year I heard they were enforcing the leash law and making them swim with leashes on, I'm curious did they make you keep the leash on or some dogs did and some didn't? Next time we all go to Mike's place ;)

Some dogs had leashes and some not, but on our way into the beach I asked someone about leashes. He said there was a park ranger (what are they called on beaches??) nearby and he will give a verbal warning first and the second time it's an expensive ticket.

It's good to know the salt water was the cause of her loose stools. I will try to discourage that next time and make sure we have tons of fresh water for her so she's not thirsty when we get there!

I can't wait to meet up with you guys next time you get together!!

Yeah Point is strict. :( But give us a few months to break you guys in and you will know all the best spots in no time!! :) I, too am sorry I forgot to mention the salt water. I give Millie a few Tums before and then after her swim and it helps tremendously! Forget those, and there is often a tummy problem :(
Glad you had fun!!

Yup, Park Rangers that's what they are called. The fine according to what a neighbor of mine read in the paper was the fine is $250. I'm not sure why they started to really chomp down on it, if it was a liability incident or just towns looking to collect as much money as possible. The other thing you might want to check into since your here is they just started this thing with a fine if your dog is not belted in.

It's something new that was recently sparked I think after a Park Ranger gave someone a ticket.
