Karen,
I PROMISE you it won't be TOO bloody.
First off, I don't grind the regular meat, I buy it that way. What I grind is the whole tom turkey necks and chicken backs. Unfortunately, I don't have the availability of free range lamb, etc. But, I do use a wholesaler (human grade) and purchase anywhere from 50 - 100 lbs of ground lamb in 5 lb. packages. Thank doG for freezers.
I purchased an American Eagle grinder, 3/4 hp. that takes care of the turkey necks and chicken backs like butter. But, you do have to chop them into relatively small pieces. Caution here Karen, the chicken backs will have alot of fat and will have some liver attached.
It is hard for me to tell you exactly what and how much to feed. The reason being is that my first newfie boy after being neutered, I really had to cut back on his food. (he was on kibble at that time), as he was becoming a porker. However, Dex (my itty bitty guy at 160 lbs. fighting weight <VBG>) is one of those that I feed a considerable amount. Simultaneously, when we went to raw, he was also neutered. Well, of course, I just assumed he would have to be cut down on his feed because he, too would pork out!
But he didn't, he lost weight. Anyway Karen I am sorry I am getting too much into specifics. All I can tell you is that Blazey, berner girl, weight 65 - 70 lbs. gets roughly 1 - 1 1/2 cups each meal (2x). First meal is the grain and veggie mix, dinner is the protein, appx. 1 cup protein. Dex, gets the veggie/grain mix of at least 2 generous cups in the am. In the pm. (because I weigh it) he gets a little over 1 1/2 lbs. of protein in his pm meal.
Sorry to be so long winded but I hope this helps!
Sue
