What Raw Food????

While FLower gets people food, she's pretty good about begging. Although if she were big enough to drool she probably would.

She gets fed outside (I don't want the bloodyness on the carpet) and when she gets tablescraps, she doesn't get them from the table. She gets them in her bowl in the kitchen. I don't think begging has to do so much with what you feed them as how.

Rory gets veggies but we microwave and then puree them. I also throw a clove of garlic into the blender. Her breath does smell like garlic just after eating though! :D

She also gets a splash of olive oil and a capfull of apple cider vinegar.

She gets raw meat, which is a combination of beef and kangaroo.

She usually gets about a cupfull of kibble mixed in, but I am going off the kibble idea. Still give her a bit though.

She will get scraps of ours too, depending what is left. Often rice or pasta, sometimes some bread crusts. (Although I understand this is not necessary).

She also eats lots of big marrow bones.

I am interested in going onto one of the diets someone here posted a link to a while back, here is the link. It's the levy diet / marg wilmott diet. Sounds good and not TOO complex.

Karen,

I PROMISE you it won't be TOO bloody.
First off, I don't grind the regular meat, I buy it that way. What I grind is the whole tom turkey necks and chicken backs. Unfortunately, I don't have the availability of free range lamb, etc. But, I do use a wholesaler (human grade) and purchase anywhere from 50 - 100 lbs of ground lamb in 5 lb. packages. Thank doG for freezers.

I purchased an American Eagle grinder, 3/4 hp. that takes care of the turkey necks and chicken backs like butter. But, you do have to chop them into relatively small pieces. Caution here Karen, the chicken backs will have alot of fat and will have some liver attached.

It is hard for me to tell you exactly what and how much to feed. The reason being is that my first newfie boy after being neutered, I really had to cut back on his food. (he was on kibble at that time), as he was becoming a porker. However, Dex (my itty bitty guy at 160 lbs. fighting weight <VBG>) is one of those that I feed a considerable amount. Simultaneously, when we went to raw, he was also neutered. Well, of course, I just assumed he would have to be cut down on his feed because he, too would pork out!  But he didn't, he lost weight. Anyway Karen I am sorry I am getting too much into specifics. All I can tell you is that Blazey, berner girl, weight 65 - 70 lbs. gets roughly 1 - 1 1/2 cups each meal (2x). First meal is the grain and veggie mix, dinner is the protein, appx. 1 cup protein. Dex, gets the veggie/grain mix of at least 2 generous cups in the am. In the pm. (because I weigh it) he gets a little over 1 1/2 lbs. of protein in his pm meal.

Sorry to be so long winded but I hope this helps!

I should also say that I get the turkey necks, chicken backs, livers, gizzards and lamb from the same wholesaler. You just have to purchase in quantity.

Sorry, forgot to mention that.

Karen,

I think I joined newf.net in October so I don't think I knew you had lost puppies. I am sorry.

Marina is no longer publishing her newsletter on paper. She will have it on her website. But, I do remember reading a lengthy article regarding pregnant bitches and food. I will try to locate it .

If I find it, perhaps my husband can scan it and fax it to you. (Remember, there are no words to describe my inability on this machine!) But, if not, do you have a fax number?

Karen,

Perhaps everyone should ignore me. I am convinced I have "oldtimer's disease". I could have sworn that article I saw was from Marina's newsletter. But now do you think I can find it????? I have ripped the house apart already. I probably will awaken at 3:00am tomorrow and realize where I read it.

Sorry about that.

I have a question
The people who grind the chicken necks and backs, why do you grind them? My 2 Newfs eat them whole and have been doing that for over 3 yrs.
The beef I buy lean ground beef so no grinding there.

A word of interest with raw. Miss Vasculitis Labrador :( was on kibble, then raw and then developed horrendous ear problems, gross brown stuff. For other reasons I put her back on kibble, interestingly, her ears cleared up and have been spotless since, my conclusion there is an allergy to beef and/or chicken.

I see that some of you really argue that for a healthy dog, you need to feed them all sorts of raw meats and vegs. but when it all boils down to it, what is wrong with feeding a quality kibble? Are any of you pet nutritionists or do you just experiment with your dog and hope that they get a balanced appropriate diet? I've read several articles pro and con on both methods and I guess I'm confused. I am beginning to think that there is a small correlation between a premium kibble and feeding raw/cooked foods and the dog’s health. I think how much exercise your dog gets probably has a higher value over whether or not you feed them fresh filet mignon and caviar, with a bottle of Perrier to wash it all down. I just thought I would stir some thought. I am not a nutritionist so I can only speculate.

Karen.. Thank you for beleiving in how you feed your dogs.. The people that want to feed their dogs kibble is fine with me.. I perfer to want to learn the """ NATURAL """ way to feed a dog. Personally, i feel feeding a dog kibble is like feeding your family a T.V. Dinner, which I proudy can say I NEVER did, and my children are 26 years old
Maybe I am just a more back to basic's, simple life kind of person. Anyone that feeds their dog kibble or any commerical food is fine with me, it is not something I want to do. Home-made food is very time consuming, I LOVE my newf, and he is worth every minute I spend making his food :D

My dog loves beer. But I only let her drink Sam Adams because no healthy dog would drink Natural Light :) Teasing.

My dog doesn't drink beer that I know of.... Hmm I better start smelling her breath when she comes home late...

Cheers just trying to put a smile on your faces

Our_newf_tofi

That reminds me of the time when our late Annie was drinking out of my husband's glass of white wine. He was sitting on the floor with his back to the glass and heard this strange slurping sound. He looked around and there she was lapping up his wine. Fortunately, she hadn't had alot of it. No ill effects for her. Thank doG!

At least she had good taste! :D

Newfs forever,

Yeah I think Tofie would drink beer if she could, I had one last night and she was going nuts to get a taste. I think its just a new puppy thing, trying out everything. She discovered the couch and how to get down the back setps of my house today so I would say all of my quietness is over. OH YEAH, almost forgot, She chewed up the end of Heather's stethoscope...... Looks like Heather should take better care of where she puts her things!! I coulda happened to anyone.

Tory loves coffee!!! She's tried to stick her tounge in my husbands coffee more then once. One time she stuck her tongue in while it was hot. She hasn't done that again. Who said Newfs weren't smart. :D

I've fed a raw diet for years and have seen it work its magic on my dogs. Newfie, Beau Bear wouldn't still be around if it weren't for this diet. It has helped him immensly and even made his back legs much more muscular. He looks pretty decent now.

I get chicken necks and backs from my local grocer (when they are able to order them.) I also feed chicken leg quarters (with offal attached) lamb, kangaroo (ordered from either BARFworld or Bravo) Emu, beef, fish, tripe, fresh veggies and fruit, yogurt, eggs, garlic, apple cider vinegar and various supplements. I use the supplement Hokamix quite a bit. It works wonders for Beau Bear (7 years old) who was diagnosed with DJD when he was 1 1/2 years old. They also get flax seed oil and wild salmon oil. In short, I guess they get a little bit of everything.

There are several companies who sell packaged raw foods. My favorite is Halshan's Premium Foods but I only order from there occasionally because they are so pricey. I've ordered from BARFworld several times and like their products. I recently had my first order of Bravo foods and Oma's pride. Those are good foods as well. I use the packaged foods just for convenience such as those days when I've forgotten to thaw out chicken or other meat. Plus my grinder broke and this way my dogs get their veggies and I don't have to do any extra work.....

Uh Oh! I love TV dinners! And beer!
 Bubba would drink beer if I let him. I left the room once, and he knocked over the bottle and proceeding to drink it off the floor til I came back, so now it goes on the counter til I get back. I feed him kibble, but do put veggies etc in it. I'll admit, he gets table scraps. Now don't kill me, not everday, and not everything. He never gets onions, and only meat if not spiced in any way first, but he does get leftover veggies.
Are mushrooms OK for dogs? Do they have any nutritional value?
