You know, i MUST play devils advocate here.
if Raw diet was the miracle cure all we ALL would be feeding it.
i know just as many newfs that were on the proper raw diet, that still had ailments from itching skin to displastic hips.
it is not the cure all, it is feed what you feel is best for your dog.

Karen..What kinds of "grains" do you feed ? I am so surprised at how much the girls love this veggie pulp (that come from our juicer)They eat every last bite of it. If it wasnt for this Forum & everyone's help, I never would have thought to give it to them
I have one other question, too.I have some garlic "OIL" and we use it to put on the food we feed to our salt water fish, but I only use like one drop...would that be good for the dogs, and how much would you give(Like maybe just a few drops ?)

I use raw ground beef and all raw vegetables put through a juicer. I don't give grain of any sort. Eggs I cook as well as the occasional liver also cooked. Raw chicken necks and backs too.
No kibble at all with it.

The great food debate
I don't believe there is one sure food to feed anyone or dog that will prevent all the ills of the world.
I had a cocker spaniel who lived to be 16 yrs always healthy, on Nutromax.
I lost a cat at 21 yrs (yes twenty one yrs!) who only ate Nutromax.

We do what we personally think is best for our pets.

Well some humans smoke and some drink or do both and outlive those who take care of themselves and of course visa versa as well.Does it not leave open the question of good genetics and sometimes luck????????

Puppy mill sherry, we have plenty of them, you know people who collect and breed many many breeds of all kinds some of them owning up to 200 dogs and they are housed in tiny crates and full of poo and pee and they are nuetered by the smelly foul owner and even declawed in the front paws, yes declawed, it breaks my heart that these operations are going strong.
the pups have no socialization that is so important at young ages and isolated in crates left to fend for themselves many times born with defects etc......

SAR,

You are absolutely correct, that raw is NOT a cureall. My Dex has been on raw for some time now. And he does have some itchiness. BUT, I control what he eats not some manufacturer or rendering plant.

Sue
PS. A good set of genes also enhances long lives.

Blessednewfy,

I feed raw lamb, raw fish, ground raw chicken backs, ground raw turkey necks. I do feed oats and millet. The millet is cooked till mushy. I use organic flaked oats steeped in water and not cooked. They get mushy too. The veggies are made into a slurry from the food processor. I use alot of green leafy, squash, sweet potato, zucchini, spinach (sometimes) parsnips, turnip, parsley, watercress. I do not cook any of the veggies.

I do cook eggs for them. They get an egg meal about once every two weeks.

They get kelp, nettle, comfrey, multivitamin, flax see oil or evening primrose, Vitamin C, and a probiotic every meal.

And, no, I do not use any kibble.

Sue

I think all of you Newfie owners out there making your dog own food are the "" BEST "" :D I am trying to figure out what to give my 16 week old newfie, he eats 3 cups of kibble a day, and a few peices of meat thrown in. I really have to figure the food groups ratio's out, personally, I think Kibble is Nasty.. :(

MV Newfie,

If you are interested there alot of books out there, some saying cook, some saying raw. But, in any event which ever way you decide to go, they will all give you an idea of how to feed, what to feed, etc.

Good Luck!

I've noticed the more we cook and feed "people food" to the more they beg and it's really anoying. Tory gets chicken, yogurt and steak along with veggies. She also gets kibble. I think she's very healthy.

torydog,

But, if you were given the same old stuff day in and day out sans taste, wouldn't you be thrilled with good old people food with some variety? I sure would.

Oh ya I definatly don't blame them but those sad eyes and the drool when they are watching you snack is to cute. I say it's anoying because I always feel guilty when I'm eating in front of them.
