We may want to adopt an adult Newf / Newf mix...any ideas where we could find one?

Well today a lost GSD found us and after cleaning him up bathing and feeding him my wife and I both realized that while we want our Newf puppy when our breeder is ready, we really would like to have an adult dog now. I know that if we decide to rescue a dog from the local SPCA or from a rescue program we definitely want to make sure we rescue a dog that otherwise would have been euthanized.

Does anyone have any idea who would be able to guide us in the right direction? We live in Pennsylvania and would like to find a Newf or Newf mix close by if possible.

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Umm..I did the exact same thing.....I was on Newf net for a couple months, on a waiting list for a puppy, then lo and behold, we realized we wanted a Newf....NOW! Enter Emma.

I got my Zeus 3 weeks to the day before his 8th birthday. He was a retired show dog that a breeder was giving up. This is ONE source of adult Newfs: dogs get returned for whatever reason or get rehomed.

You may also want to check with your local Newf rescue.

I see a couple Newfs or Newf Mixes on Petfinder in Pennsylvania. :D

Is one place you can check. We adopted Millie and Winston from this organization and have been very happy! They deliver... and they've got a lot of nice newfoundlands right now.

They have fairly strict criteria for adoption but perhaps you can find a match.

good luck!

We have had four rescue newfoundlands and have loved the whole process. It's a little different than purchasing a puppy. You've got the "baggage" and the history ... but Newfoundlands make such excellent rehomes. They just are a very good breed for that. They try so hard to fit in and so appreciative!

In just two months are rescues have come SUCH a long way. Millie was super shy and now she's just blossoming. Winston has calmed down and learned to live with our little children much better than when he first came. We love them both so much.

you could always pretend the GSD is a big black slobbery love muffin!

I would have kept him in a second, he was so sweet, but his owners called us back and picked him up...he traveled quite a few miles and we found him laying in the middle of our dirt road. I was hoping inside that no one called for him...but he was really happy to be reunited with his family :)

If you have a breeder lined up for a puppy, contact them and get them to spread the word that you're interested in a rehome. It worked for me. That's how we got Echo. She walked into our back yard, looked around, and the little bubble that should be over her head read "Oh, yes. This is home." She's been great ever since.

I found Sundance (he was at a shelter in western PA) by searching Petfinder. I still check obsessively and there are definitely lots of Newf mixes looking for homes. If you want a purebred, the Newf clubs are definitely the way to go.

Thanks for all the help everyone. We have some leads on a few Newfs and my wife is also strongly considering a GSD as she loves them and also wants a dog she can exercise with (long walks), which a Newf simply is not.

One way or another she really wants a dog soon and our breeder wont have a puppy for us for at least another year I dont think :(

I will keep you all posted.
