vaccums

I know I know, this net has talked about this more than once but can we review please  I talked to GAD and he said they have just come to the conclusion they are going to buy a vacuum every two years. I am asking all the experts on this forum, what do you suggest is a good vacuum even if we keep it only for two years

I have wood floors and have room carpets. I find that those with spinning brushes just throw the dirt around.

Four years on our Dyson Animal "Ball". Wood floors and area rugs. It is starting to go - but 4 years with 2 Newfs and 2 cats is a good run IMO.

I too need a new vacuum cleaner. I have been watching the dyson animal threads... how does the part where you dump the dirt work?

I liked the idea of no bags when I bought our last vacuum cleaner but the container that dumps the dirt is disgusting. I feel like I need to put on a face mask and glove up just to empty it.

Don't get too excited about the no bag deal, everytime that stupid Dyson commercial comes on and he talks about the "one handed" emptying I want to find him and punch him in the throat.

He obviously doesn't use his vaccum to pick up dog hair. Long dog hair that you have to pull out of the canister.

Other than that, it's great.

Miele for 14 years with 4 Newfs still going strong but I also bought a Sebo last year which is more than awesome. Both are expensive but worth the money.

I have an electrolux and it's awful. About 10 yrs old. I keep hearing good things about the Dyson Animal, but it's so expensive! Is it worth if I only have hardwood floors?

Also, pulling hair out of a yucky cannister sounds EW. I hadn't thought of that yet, only dirt and drool and wet dripping coat and dust bunnies.

Riccar canister. Love it. Was just at the vacuum store yesterday and drooled over the new ones. :). He said they get at least 5 Dysons in per week for repairs...

I have hardwood floors and area carpets. Bought a refurbished Dyson Animal of Ebay 4 yrs ago for $150. Works great. no trouble emptying it but I hate the way the hair gets twisted around the brushes.

Dyson has amazing customer service, but we only know that because Elvis has killed three of them in 5 years. The first two were the yellow ball, which is not the animal type. The first time the hose part quit working and they replaced the whole thing. The second time the brush part burned through the front plastic and they sent us a new head. That one finally died last year (2 years after getting new head) and we got the animal ball version. It is SO much better than the yellow ball and we have carpet, laminate, and tile. However I do think it's eating our carpet a bit and we have a neighbor who works for a local carpet company and they do not recommend Dysons for that very reason.

Anyway, we love the animal ball. It is pricey, but we felt comfortable enough with their customer service to buy one.

Miele tank for my bare floors and Riccar upright for my rugs. They are both around 14 years old and have had no problems. I have only have 1 newf and only for the past 2 years. So it's not like they've been through 14 years of newf hair. But I have had multiple dogs in the past who were very sheddy.

Their customer service IS awesome.....they've walked me through a few clogged hoses ( keep a wire hanger around the house ). Mine is starting to make a funny noise, but as long as it picks up hair, I'm all right with it.

I just HATE sticking my hand into the canister to pull the hair out. I have indoor/outdoor area rugs from Ballard's, which are super awesome, and the hair is much easier to vacuum up, but when I see him on those commercials talking about how EASY it is to dump it with his "one button" I want to beat him over the head with the canister. :whistling:

I've had a Miele canister (Titan?) for 5 years with 2 long hair cats and 1 newf. After Maggie came home we did have to upgrade the power brush head but that's been going strong for 3 years. (The cheaper power brush head allowed the hair to get around the bearings that spin the power brush and melt things. Awesome).

We have to cut the hair that collects on the brush every few times, but it takes less than 5 min and comes right off if we just cut it with a pair of sharp scissors.

You have the option to turn off the brush for non-carpeted areas.

And I don't have to stick my hand in anywhere to empty out the hair...it has bags.

I have had my DC-14 Animal since 2006 I think. Once I learned how to take it apart and put it back together, it rocks I have never had any issues with it. If anything gets stuck, you can litterally take it apart and get it unstuck. Still have my original Dyson, and all the original parts including the Belt. That's 4 Newfies, and a Pom. In fact Oreo Likes to be vaccumed with the wand.
