Urinary Diet Foods

I feel there is more knowledge here than at most vets offices, so I'm coming to you guys with Moonlight's plight. She is having UTI's far too frequently and the vet wants her on Hill's U/D food - low protein and fat. I know that Hill's is not a favorite brand on NN. Any ideas for alternatives for food and treats?

googling I saw Flint River Ranch and Wysong mentioned as alternatives. What about a home made diet, raw or cooked.

Hi
If you are into herbal supplements I found this info on the following link:
http://www.nativeremedies.com/petalive/articles/how-treat-uti-dogs-naturally.shtml

Practically all herbs and homoeopathic remedies that are traditionally used for treating humans are effective for pet UTI too. Garlic is a natural antibiotic whereas Echinacea is very effective to remove residual products of infections. Rosehips are a major source of iron and vitamin C and Alfalfa and Uva Ursi can be used for reducing acidity in urine and irritation in mucosal linings. For increased vitality and as a tonic for blood and nervous system, Yarrow can be considered. Buchu is a blood cleanser and a specific remedy for UTI.

I'll keep checking and see what I can find as far as diet plans. I have some books which go over Renal disease diets (which are low protein but they are not low fat?). After my Timber was spayed she developed spay incontinence. I use a combo of 5 herbs for about 6 months and this worked for us. Natural remedies take so long to build up and kick in but I've good results from trying. I'll keep looking for UTI stuff.
all the best,
Marina

I like using natural and homeopathic stuff, but like Marina said it is never a overnight fix

Going to ask vet about cranberries. Wish I could find a recipe for dog biscuits that she could eat. Going to ask about that, because all she offered the other day are basically yucky as far as Moonlight is concerned. She wants something that crunches - I think.

can she have raw asparagus? they are crunchy and good for kidneys. I swear by cranberries for our luvs.

I've over ruled the vet on the treats. We're going with 1/2 milkbones and smaller amounts of the things she likes, because at this point I just want her to eat anything. She won't touch the prescription canned stuff and doesn't like the kibble much better. I've just about had it with all this food business. She's feeling better and I think she'd like her old food best, even though it's not good for her, at least she'll have food in her stomach and the antibiotics won't mess up her stomach on top of everything else.
