Tank is in heat - need advice

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this. Tank is in heat. I noticed some blood drops on the floor yesterday. I checked her again this morning and she is definitely bleeding. My breeder is out of town, but I left her an email and voice mail.
I have never had a dog go through a heat cycle before. Any advice as to what I should be doing during it, how long will it last, etc.?
Tank is 9 months old..last Thursday. I am a bit worried! She has been acting fine, except a lot of soft whining/whimpers last night. I got up several times to just love on her and rub her belly!
My girls and I are heading to Myrtle Beach next Thursday for my niece's third birthday. I plan on taking Tank with me so she can swim in the ocean and play with my brother's dog. Is there any supplies I should take with us?
I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Personally, I would leave her home. Letting her run around on the beach is a recipe for disaster. She'll attract every male in the area, neutered or not. If she's going to someone's house, she could leave a bloody trail on their carpet and will leave her scent in their house. Their male dog is likely to find her scent attractive.

"The estrous cycle can be divided into 4 stages:

1. Proestrus: This stage begins with the appearance of vaginal bleeding. It normally lasts from 4 to 9 days. Male dogs become very interested in the female; however, she will not yet mate with them.

2. Estrus: This is the stage in which the female will accept the male and conception can occur. The vaginal discharge is more yellowish than bloody. Ordinarily, the stage lasts for 4 to 13 days. Your female will stand still and hold her tail to the side when you touch her back or a male dog tries to mount.

3. and 4. Metestrus and anestrus: These 2 stages are periods of ovarian activity, but with no significant outward signs. False pregnancies frequently occur during metestrus.

You should consider your pet to be "in season" for 21 days: 7 days coming into heat, 7 days in heat, 7 days going out. Though conception is most likely during the middle 7 days, Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules. Confine your pet for the entire 3 weeks."

We had purchased diaper things for Darcy, but we never used them. We only saw a few drops during the three weeks. She acted crazy as heck, but she was okay otherwise. If she goes with you, you would have to keep her on a tight leash - literally. She is one beautiful girl and she will smell really yummy to the local boys.

Yep Julie, I'm in the same boat! I hope you figure out a good plan for Tank and your vacation! She's such a part of your family it would be hard to leave her behind. Is your brother's dog male or female? Altered? I figure this is as good a time as any to train those late night "potty" (aka, lay outside in the snow) trips out of River. We'll make it through..only three more weeks!

when my stevie went into heat i was so very worried that she may attract another dog we pretty much stayed around the house with short walks. she was also a bit grumpy with my other dog. they can really change their attitudes during this time and really need to be someplace that an unneutered dog can get to them. if you take her to the beach, any un-neutered dog that is there will be at her, risking a dog fight and possible unplanned litter.

I agree, don't take her. She would make your life miserable on your trip. A very well known Newf breeder once told me "They call female Newfs in heat "B(*&^es" for a reason."

I would never take any bitch in heat out of a secure area. We have a special kennel room/run for this. So that our bitches are safe. Even has the kennel run covered, so no small climbers can get in. It is amazing what some dogs can do to escape ( your Tank) or to gain entry ( dog in lust).
My first newf who game in heat with us twenty years ago was a gently lady like newf called Jessy.........She was a velcro newf and never away from us............Well whilst she was in full on heat, she escaped for moments only, through the front door, whilst my mother was walking through it.......She just took off :shocker:, Luckily hubby was out side and literally only just caught her by her tail on her way to "freedom". It is funny now, but we have always been extremely careful since and built our kennel. Just be very careful, even with the quietest girls. Good luck :) Ronnie
