Yesterday Elvis got into a pill bottle containing an outdated antibiotic. I had gone through our medicine drawer the other day and pulled out all the old and expired medications to take to a pharmacy for proper disposal. I had closed the box and tucked it away on a bottom shelf, thinking it was in safe place.........and I was wrong.
I was outside weeding when my husband yells at me to come inside because Elvis had gotten into some medicine. Luckily I knew exactly how many pills were in the bottle (10) and we were able to find 6 whole pills and the remains of 2 more. I called the vet (thanking God the entire time they were open on Sunday morning), explained the situtation, and found out if he had indeed eaten 4 pills that was still within his normal dose and he should be fine.
Now I know what you're thinking - why didn't I give him hydrogen peroxide to make him puke up the pill? Because we didn't have any. I know, having that in the house is the cardinal rule of dog ownership, and I failed big time. I ran right out and got some in case he ever feels the need to drug himself again, but still. We got really lucky.
