Sunday Scare

Yesterday Elvis got into a pill bottle containing an outdated antibiotic. I had gone through our medicine drawer the other day and pulled out all the old and expired medications to take to a pharmacy for proper disposal. I had closed the box and tucked it away on a bottom shelf, thinking it was in safe place.........and I was wrong.

I was outside weeding when my husband yells at me to come inside because Elvis had gotten into some medicine. Luckily I knew exactly how many pills were in the bottle (10) and we were able to find 6 whole pills and the remains of 2 more. I called the vet (thanking God the entire time they were open on Sunday morning), explained the situtation, and found out if he had indeed eaten 4 pills that was still within his normal dose and he should be fine.

Now I know what you're thinking - why didn't I give him hydrogen peroxide to make him puke up the pill? Because we didn't have any. I know, having that in the house is the cardinal rule of dog ownership, and I failed big time. I ran right out and got some in case he ever feels the need to drug himself again, but still. We got really lucky.

Sometimes calling the vet and finding out that there is no danger is better than a puking dog. One of ours did the same thing about a month ago.

On the upside, you'll never be without hydrogen peroxide again and neither will many reading this. It's important to replace it about every 6 months to be fully effective. I write the date of opening on my bottles...

I looked up ipecac for dogs and it says to use 1 tsp. per 10 lbs of body weight. I think i'd feel better giving the peroxide since you don't have to use so much of it. I'm going to check the date on my hydrogen peroxide right now!

So sorry that happened to you and Elvis.

So weird that you brought this up....I just bought hydrogen peroxide today (since I realized I didn't have any) for that exact reason.

So very glad that everything was ok and that you knew how many pills were in that bottle. For those that don't always have a vet they can call, there are animal poison control numbers (there may be a fee though) that are good to keep handy so you don't have to search in a panic situation.

Elvis getting into mischief? Doesn't sound like the Elvis I know.

Stacy, we were shocked! This bottle was tucked away deep in a box. I have no idea how or why he got into it like he did - I didn't even believe Carl at first when he was yelling at me to come inside. I think 6 years is the new 9 months and we've got a middle age teenager on our hands.

Mudji ate some of Angus' heart meds when he was a puppy. Googled and found the poison control number, called, and had a nice chat with the vet on duty. Mudji ended up fine, and we were far more vigilant when giving pills to anyone. Now, even with no newfs, the number is on the fridge!

Oh, and I just put the hydrogen peroxide in a bowl for mudji to drink like water. He did, and was always partial to 'helping' me when I put peroxide on any wounds. He always has to lick to ensure I had cleaned the wound properly!

Elvis!

So glad he's ok. He must have caught up on his napping. :) I have animal poison control and regular poison control on the fridge just for Maggie-I've had to call for her three times in four years. I've called the regular for her, they have a lot of dog information as well.
