Summer Plans

I know I haven't posted in a bit, I had a few days to brood over losing Spike and then went full force into getting the house ready to put on the market. So it has been BUSY around here.

I'm just wondering if anybody has any neat things planned for the summer, trips, projects etc. I would love to hear about any and all things fun! I know Nessa is probably working on a nursery for that baby!!

My current project is obviously working on getting this house sold and then I'm off to live in Las Vegas for the months of June and July(for my boyfriend's job.) Once I get there, I'm hoping to get Koda to be a certified therapy doggie! After that I'm hoping to live somewhere for more than a year!

I write travel articles and take pictures for the CNC's newsletter; I am NOT the editor. I will probably be doing a lot of traveling this summer covering CNC and other Newf events.

Nothing too exciting here...the hubby started in a new position a couple of months ago and won't be able to use any vacation time until next spring. Boo.

We have a ton of landscaping projects to get completed and should be done in the next few weekends. After that, it's all about fun days with Rowan and Mila! We plan on taking Mila to some doggy beaches in Chicago to learn how to swim this summer and I'm going to be joining some local dog walking groups with her too. I just found one nearby that meets bi-weekly called Wine & Wags which sounds like a lot of fun..dogs+wine+cheese = Yay!

We plan on taking Rowan to the Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago & DuPage Children's Museums, the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and other fun stuff like that. He's gotten to the point where he's no longer a baby (though not yet a toddler), so I can finally start doing fun stuff with him, experience the world through new eyes (his eyes) and I'm really, really excited about that!

But no vacays on the horizon...

Will spend the next few weeks finishing repairs to flood damage downstairs.
Would like to get to at least one show this summer.
Hoping it will not be as crushingly hot as last summer so I can fit in more walkies and other activities with the newfs. We basically hid indoors all last summer....

Brad, Travel articles, what fun! I hope to see lots of pictures from Newf events on here!

Kristen, wine and wags sounds RIGHT up my alley! Also, I didn't know Mila hadn't learned to swim yet, neither has Koda so I'm getting pretty excited to teach her how to swim once we get to Vegas. Has mister Rowan visited the zoo before? That will be so much fun, to bad Mila can't go look at the animals too!

Anita, I'm worried about the heat this summer too, if it drains any more of Koda's energy she might as well be comatose. It's only getting to highs of 90 here in New Mexico. Sorry about the flood damage, that's no fun. Hopefully you will make it out to some shows and the heat won't make your Newf babies comatose too.

Yeah, last summer I was a planet. Er, I mean, I was heavily and miserably pregnant and you couldn't have paid me to put on a swimsuit, so Mila only has kiddie pool, hose, sprinkler and wading out into the Fox River up to her chest experience, no actual swimming yet! And no zoo yet...up until a month or two ago Rowan really didn't have the mental capacity to appreciate activities like that. Now it's a totally different story, so this summer is going to be a blast I think :)

We are going to be spending lots of time at the beach with the grandchildren this summer. The baby is now 14 months old and she is a regular beach baby already. Grandson has lots of friends, who come down to our beach town, so he is quite happy to be here, too. I am retiring in 10 days and can't wait to spend more time with the grandchildren and the dogs.

Work. Summer, holidays and weekends are our busy times with summers being the busiest with all the families traveling.

Waterwork, lots and lots of waterwork. We're going to Estonia for a weeklong waterwork camp (as instructors) and then holding our own waterwork camp (weekend) in Finland. Rest of the time I'll be in busy in Belgium with the dogs, training them and watching the small ones grow. And I'll finally hopefully finish the translation of our book (focusing on water rescue (training and the real thing + rules in different countries etc.) and explaining more about the working newf structure, and adding bits about breeding regulations in different countries). It'll be great once it's done!

I always love seeing the pictures you post of the dogs doing seemingly impossible feats in the water. You do great work, and that sounds like fun for both the pups and you!

Hi there, I believe that you're moving to NYC this summer/fall. I lived in Hoboken and worked in NYC for 8 years - just moved to Southern New Jersey two years ago. I would love to meet up once you're settled. We took our pup to the beach today near Atlantic City and wound up meeting two Newfs - from different families - all three owners were shocked and excited to see other Newfs together. If only we had gotten a picture! Good things to come!

I usually work through the summer, let those with kids have that time off. Same with most of the Kid-centric Holidays. Besides, if I'm going to be miserable with the heat, I might as well be paid for it :D

I will be in the Seattle area in July, Washington in the summer is fabulous. My sister runs a summer camp for kids and I usually adjust my work schedule and go help her on some of her big trip days. I will also get to see the Zoo, Disneyland, baseball game.

Lisa did I read you are going to be moving to Las Vegas before your move to New York? If so, you will really be a busy bee this summer.

Larz, that would be a lot of fun! There are a few other Newf Netters that like in the NYC/Jersey area. We were talking about trying to organize a get together with our pups sometime I'm hoping it all comes together this fall!

Emily, yes you read it correctly, I will be living in Las Vegas for the summer but we mostly have our stuff there and I will not have to re move from there to New York. But yes busy busy indeed. Koda's gonna be like "what the heck, pick a place to live already mom!"

Lovely new profile picture!

We just moved into a house so I'm sure the unpacking, cleaning and organizing will take the better part of the summer. Besides that, work, work and WORK! I'm in the news business and while great news stories are scarce in the summer, lots of people take holidays. So I'll be filling in the gaps.

And, of course, introducing Moosh to the lake:)

Training, learning, new adventures. Orka just turned 18 months old, ordered a mountain of carting / drafting gear. He's doing really well with the commands. Lots of wild dog time, last night hiked in 100s of acres of deserted land on an island in the Columbia River where he ran, frolicked, splashed, chased deer and dug holes in the sand. Today he went wild stallion at Sellwood where the Willamette has flooded very high and has inundated the dog park. Such a crazily happy pup playing with other dogs in the water. There was a professional photographer there who spent a long time focused on Orka and said she'd send pix.

Finished buying all the kayaking gear for waterwork training (hello Hullivators!) and rented a space for storage right on the Willamette so we can take the bus daily and train and explore. Orka is out of his mind with excitement at this. He did all the shopping with us and knows something major is up having to do with water. One eager beaver. Been taking him down all the ramps and docks and getting him used to the heavy boat, ppl, bike traffic. Today we were at the boathouse and cannons were going off, maybe Rose Festival or ships or pigeons or Memorial Day -- it took him a while to get used to the very loud booms and the concussive richochet off all the bridges and cement downtown.

Ordered landrollers for rollerjoring. We'll be joining the Cascade Sled Dog Club for training in skijoring and canicross. They have pull clinics and great events, all seasons. The mountains here are still covered in deep snow. It snowed yesterday and the rivers are overflowing, high flooding. We took our tandem SOT kayak to train with Orka today and there are no beaches anywhere, water literally gone over all banks and put-ins. Snowmelt from the Rockies has swollen the Columbia and backed up the Willamette. Sandy River Delta is under water. Who ever heard of too much water to train for waterworks? Nuts.

And of course more obedience training and service tasks, and walks. Adding backpacking in the mountains, forest, coast range and Gorge. I know the backpacking is supposed to be the dog behind the walker but I like to see Orka in front of me so that's how we're going to do it.

So lots of new sports, lots of training, lots of fun, all with and because of my sweet playbunny Newfie bear. Now everywhere we go ppl say, "Oh that's Orka, I saw him at the park, or the bus, or the mall, or on the river, or the waterfront, or Mt Hood ... "

Today 2 kayak instructors showed me how to cart the kayak, position the cart and straps so Orka can steady and balance it and pull (but no weight) from the front with me steering / pushing from the back.

LINE OUT! is going to pertain to so many things! And we are already having a blast.
