14 months ago Takota came HOME as a troubled 2 year old. 6 weeks ago Josh came HOME as a troubled 12 year old grandson (we raised him for about 5 of his first 8 years).
I was a little concerned how Kota was going to handle a hyper preteen invading his home since I didn't know his history with kids prior to us getting him other than his first home did have children in it. I had nothing to worry about as it turned out as these two troubled rescues have found each other.
Kota has blossomed even more in the past few weeks now that he has "his" boy. He follows him around, has a playmate and buddy, listens to and respects our grandson too. Kota is Josh's study buddy during homeschool as he patiently waits for breaks so they can play or spend time together.
Today Josh got very frustrated over not getting his way and his temper just about got the best of him, Kota immediately was right there trying to make things better. The more Josh tried to push him away, the more Takota was determined to make him feel better and calm down. When nothing seemed to work, Takota backed away a few feet and started yapping at the grandson. The entire time I am right there prepared to intervene as needed. Kota can be very vocal when he wants something and he wanted Josh to calm down and feel better! After a minute or so, Kota comes back over to Josh and plants a huge lick right on his nose, backs up, flops down with all 4 feet in the air, looks right and us and starts yapping again. That finally broke the dam, Josh started to calm back down. Takota then calmly gets up, walks over and lays his head in his boys lap, after a few good scratches he calmly lays back down satisfied that he has fixed his boy up fine.
This is a capture of the most common position of my boys during "school", study buddies and two troubled boys finding their way with each others help.
I am confident that Kota is going to help Josh heal after some rough times and learn better self control (he has ADHD), learn to trust again and know he is safe and loved. Josh is learning to groom newfs and how to train dogs and I see these two doing rally, obedience or agility in the future when both have progressed to that point.
Josh grew up with our old girl Ursa and was here for a short while after we adopted Bella (they both remembered him) so he did come with some newf sense but had not met Takota before. I do believe our rescued boy Kota is going to be a rescuer for our grandson!
