strange Newf behaviors

I need some help with some strange behaviors from the girls.

I am pretty sure from what I read its all totally normal but despite being in obedience training I cant stop the worst of it.

1) Denali 4 months has to stand in her water bowl to drink - the water bowl is now outside but she is always wet. I have tried an elevated bowl which she ducks her head in till fully immersed and is just as wet ( if not wetter) than the water bowl on the floor.

2) Daisy 7 months Tips up every dinner bowl every time, only eats her food after tipping it on the floor and using her nose to push to the corner of the room.

3) every morning when I first get up she grabs my pajamas wont let go until she has torn a hole in them. Doesn't do this any other time of day.

4) refuses to play in the yard and run around and will only go when I go with her.

Any help would be appreciated !!

That all sounds totally normal.

In the mornings, it sounds like she is really excited to see you. It sounds like a behavior you can work on with training. I'm not exactly sure what may work here, but someone more experienced will chime in I'm sure! Perhaps distracting her with some work (sit, stay, down, whatever she knows) would get her away from this. That is the thing that works best for Maggie. They can't work and misbehave at the same time (usually...haha...).

For the playing outside, my girl, although older, is the same way. She just wants to be wherever I am - inside or out. She won't go outside without me.

On the water bowl, try a travel bowl with a smaller hole. We have this one for the car. It works very well. http://www.basspro.com/PortablePETW...hopping_googleproductextensions&kpid=10211109

I have a beautiful new bathrobe since our Newf puppy kept biting my old one. It had some lovely holes in it. She was going to obedience at the time but I think it was something she grew out of. She still gets excited but she is better able to channel it now without biting/tugging on my robe.

1. and 2) Put her water bowl and food dish in individual milk crates to prevent tipping, dripping, sitting, swimming, etc.

3.) "NO" offer a suitable replacement to tug and tear at (rope toys are good.)

4.) At 4 months, I'm a little hinkey about leaving a pup out without supervision. Maybe training to potty while leashed and then "free time" play as a reward for potty.

Though for the water bowl we eventually put a brick on the bottom of a bucket for Manna and found a bowl she couldn't grab onto for her food. (sides slippery and bottom sticky)

Head in water bowl is normal

Can we hijack this thread for other Newfie nonsense? Loki likes to chase his butt---his tail sometimes, but mostly his butt. When he catches it, he'll chew at his haunches for a little bit and then tumble happily to the floor and roll around. Don't think it's hot spots, I think he just like the fur on his hips!

I've got one.

Any time we give Nala a water bowl in public, she will drink what she wants. Then, she will either proceed to splash out all of the remaining water with her front paws in a digging motion, or grab the side of the bowl with her mouth and pick it up, dumping out all of the remaining water. She doesn't do this with her water dish at home, only water dishes in public.

She also never lays down like a normal dog when she is tired. She just collapses to the floor with a loud *THUD*.

Loki does exactly those things. When he's done with water in public, it goes everywhere---and when he's lying down, his whole body hits the floor simultaneously. He also likes to let out big sighs when he thumps down. WHUMP "Siiiiiigh, another long day of tearing up my towels and slobbering on dad's pants. I need a drink."

Nala does that too! The newf life must be so hard! Haha.

DITTO ALL ABOVE....except Traveler does the "Lean" and tries valiantly to keep himself upright until gravity and sleep take control and he literally crashes to the floor.

as for the original problems, LIKE Tricia's solutions. Have done these my self. This too shall pass and you'll look back fondly at the shenanigans.Gracie only tips the water dish in public too.

I love Tricia's solutions. The milk crate has caused some annoyance over the last few days with the girls trying very hard to figure out how to work around moms contraption.. The rope/toy distraction currently isn't working and we pray its just a phase !!

Daisy lies down like a giraffe, front legs go down first ( and then stays in that position for a few seconds) her back end eventually follows, There is no urgency in Newf world !!

Newfoundlands are people dogs, most do not like to be without their people. Remember what they were bred for was to go out on fishing boats with their "person". Which is why they excel at water rescue. They love being with people, saving them, swimming with them, or just laying at their feet. Most Newfs do not like being without their humans, which is why they are not outside dogs. My guys wont go out in the back yard without me, at 6 and 2.5yrs old. If they do, its very quick to do their business and its a mad dash back to the door to get inside if I don't follow them out, however, if I am outside with them, they'll lay at my feet.

All the other things you described are totally normal for Newf pups. I have an array of clothing that I wear when I get a puppy, already has holes in it from puppy shark attacks until they learn their manners and not to play with you like they're playing with another puppy from their litter.
