Still constant chewing at 1.5 yrs

Cadie is chewing me out of house and home. If she isn't sleeping she is chewing on whatever is available. For those of you who had newfs still chewing at this age, did it ever stop? Part of it is because she is on restrictions because of surgery at the end of May- she is only allowed a 20min walk/no play/ no run so she doesn't get worn out, but she was a chewer since she was a young pup. I can't take it! I can't afford it either-buying things has gotten too expensive. Mostly I am looking for a morsel of hope that this is something that won't last forever!

How's she doing after her surgery? Everything healing ok?

I have no experience with puppies but it sounds like at least some of it could be boredom with the lack of exercise. Remember you can exercise her brain too. You can teach her games or have her play with dog puzzles (supervised so she doesn't eat them of course). This can be almost as effective as physical exercise.

I hope it stops but PFH aka Owain is still chewing everything in sight and ripping up any paper left around. He is almost 15 months. I have never had such a Newf chewer before and can't give you any advice :(

Some interactive toys might help. What do you have for chew toys? Do you do the frozen kong thing? It's summertime, so what about putting a yummy treat that she LOVES into some tupperware with water and freezing it (a treatsicle!)? That could keep her occupied. I think all you can really do is occupy her mentally, redirect her to things she SHOULD chew on, and distract, distract, distract away from what she shouldn't be chewing.

One of the only toys that lasted with my two newfs was the Galileo bone by Nylabone. It comes in several sizes.

Agree with puzzles and maybe a car ride too. She can work her nose smelling all those good smells might help her get the outdoor experience.

Hi all,
I have two puzzles - the "difficult" one is super easy. She loves rawhide but those aren't good for her and get $ after awhile. Not too interested in antlers -occasionally, not even that into raw bones, likes my deck :(. Rugs :(. Any non-skid mats I put down for her :(. Could care less about nylabones, rope toys, and can demolish a "tough" toy of defleece a toy faster than you can take it out of the bag. I started giving her cardboard and she tears that up into tiny pieces. I'm telling you, it is constant! I have done frozen treats, but kongs she won't work at- loses interest no matter what's inside. Believe me, I could write a book on things to try for chewers. My question: will it ever stop!!!???

Myra was a little bit of a chewer her favorites were a nylabone circle and a leather circle dog chew, for some odd reason she loved the circles, she'd flip it over her nose...under her chin, amused her most days. It will stop but I'm afraid you might have some time yet. Find out what's her favorite and stock up!

Wow...I am sorry! Raw bones were my suggestion too...Jake will sit for hours chewing on a raw bone. Maybe try a buffalo bone? Mine seem to love those...It will last for days as they try to get the marrow out of the bone...just freeze the bone when they aren't chewing on it to keep it fresh...other than that no suggestions as mine aren't chewers but at 2 Jake still EATS everything he sees...literally...everything...leaves, sticks, cardboard, paper...etc...

Yes she should stop as she gets older, but that doesn't mean she won't have a weak moment and chew something later.

Our Coleman at 5yrs chewed the tongue out of my duck boots. :)

Oh these crazy animals! The two things that will keep her busy for a long time are the rawhide, which I don't like her to really have those, but the SPLIT antler is a fave of hers. Just a little pricey to keep buying those - she can go through one in under a week.

It sounds like you're at the end of your rope. Just breathe deeply, count to 10, and go buy more expensive antlers (put her in the car if outside temps allow). I figure it's cheaper to buy the expensive chews than more expensive electronics, etc. My "puppy" disappeared around age 2 and I miss laughing at his antics. Are you sure she wouldn't love a nice knuckle bone. Chumley will go at one for 2-3 days straight. They take a long time to dwindle.

:tequila: yes, I am kinda at the end of my rope, especially with a LOT of barking, and an "accident" in the house about every two weeks, but those are other issues! I haven't tried the knuckle bones - are these chicken? From a butcher? With whatever meat is on them just give raw? But should
it be refrigerated when she isn't gnawing on it? I am a little, um, worried about how that raw stuff all works :)

Talk to a butcher and ask for a knuckle bone. He'll know what you mean. I cut any fat off I can find. I ask mine to cut it into 1 to 2 inch sections (kinda like sliced bread) since these bones are so immense. I would put a bib on her too, they can get quite sloppy. Just give it raw, but rinse and freeze when she's done.
