Just dropped her off. She'll be out around 1pm and I can pick her up after 5. They have lots of giant breed dogs that are patients there such as Great Pyrs and Great Danes. I believe Steely is their only Newfoundland. She is in excellent hands. I'll let ya'll know status later today.
Surprised I guess - Different vets like to do different things on pickup. My vet likes to keep them overnight just in case. I pick up the next day.

I'm glad she's with the vet that knows giant breeds! She'll do fine, but let us know.

Has Steely had her first heat? If so, when was it? I'm trying to figure out the average first heat of Newfs.

She's out! Dr. A called me a few hours ago to let me know that everything went well and she was starting to wake up. They were about to clip the hair between her pads for me! I can't wait to see her!

Yay! Glad to hear she is out of her procedure and doing okay. Glad she is coming home with you..You can keep an eye on her.
Our clinic insists on keeping them overnight, and there's no one there overnight to monitor them which is really scary. I was DETERMINED that I was going to bring Hannah home after her spay...I found out that getting her out of the clinic would have required getting the sheriff involved. Makes no sense to me...........

I will. I'm so excited to see her!

Oh, Diane I forgot to post this on my last reply. Which was the whole reason for quoting your post in the first place...
Steely had her first heat at 11 months old. About 2 months ago.

Thanks. Is there any reason you waited two months beyond the heat? How long/terrible was her heat? I'm really dreading dealing with it here!

Glad she is doing well!!

I waited because I've read here among other places that it was best to let her hormone levels settle before doing a spay. I didn't think it would be in her best interest to spay her right after her heat finished.

It seemed like it was over within the estimated 21 days that I've read about. But it took almost 2 more weeks for her vulva to to go back down. Her nipples are still pretty big after it was all said and done. The blood was yuck but never quite enough to warrant a diaper. I just cleaned up after her and she was pretty adamant on cleaning herself. All in all, it wasn't too bad, although it completely grossed my best friend out. Usually it was just drops, but if she got up from laying down it would smear on the tile floor. And she had the smell, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

It wasn't bad, but I was SO ready for it to be over. I had to accompany her to the potty everytime she wanted to go outside. And Steely being a dog, would want to stay back there and have some fun, which I had to constantly nip in the bud, ruining her good time. She couldn't go to my parent's house because Wyatt is not altered, so she didn't get to see him or her best bud, Lily for almost a month. I've heard a lot of people say that their girls in heat go big time stir crazy & man, that is no lie. I don't know if you do the bell on the door with Darce, but Steely was not messing around with that thing. She used it to let us know SHE WANTED OUT RIGHT NOW! My hat goes off to you ladies & gentleman who are breeders and show your girls.

Lili would like Steely to know, since she just had her hysterectomy, that boiled hamburger and rice should be served to the patient in bed for the first few days postoperatively. She would also like Steely to know that a lace embellished cotton camisole works better than a lampshade on the head for protecting the boo-boo and lifts a girl's spirits.

Get well soon, Steely!

Thanks for the info, Courtney. I am researching all I can to find the best time to have her spayed. I do think I will wait a couple of months after her heat.

How's your girl today?
She's great. Last time was the first time in a long time that she has woken me up in the middle of the night to go potty. Aaron said that she rang the back bell about 8 times. Pretty awesome that he heard her ringing and still woke me up to let her out. Thanks pal! Is that supposed to be some kind of foreshadowing on how he thinks parenthood is going to work in our house?
Anyway, she jumped up a couple of times when she heard Lulu jump on the bed, and that is typical Steely fashion. Her incision is about 2" long and looks great. I am so glad that it's over and she's home healing.
She's confused because I've crated her today and she's had free run for a few months now! For your own good, Stee!
Thank you for checking up on her!

Anita, I didn't even see this earlier. Sorry about that. Yes, there is no one there overnight at our clinic either, so I wouldn't have wanted to leave her there. Lulu has stayed several nights there, however. When she was not even 2, she went into renal failure a few days after I had her declawed. It was the anti-inflamatory we had her on. She was there for about 3 days receiving fluids. In that situation, they did have someone there through the night. My best friend was seriously preparing me to have to let her go, but she completely pulled through and healed.
Anyway, if it was a situation where an animal needs to be there and monitored, they have someone there. But our vet had every confidence that Steely would be fine at home and we totally trust and love him. I mean, he's my best friends dad, but I might be more skeptical had they not done what they did for Lulu.
