Sockeye Salmon Oil Is The Fountain Of Youth

So is my opinion:kiss: I've given it to my pregnant girls right off but didn't give it much thought aside from that. My naughty girl Daria has really been looking her age recently..and maybe a few years beyond:darn: About a month ago I started her on SSO and I swear the change was almost instantaneous!! All of a sudden she had a brighter, happier face. She moved more fluid. Seemed happy and well. Most noticeable were her eyes. They weren't pained or tired or sad. They were vibrant...alive....happy!! She had a spring in her step....she was BACK! ( OK...so there was, of course, a "down side" to this...Daria was once again in full naughty mode and getting into all the things she shouldn't be....) This time though? Wasn't such a hardship....more of a blessing. Which I swear I NEVER saw coming!! LOL. I love that my bad girl is back, kickin' ass, takin' names and causing all kinds of trouble. I can always buy more groceries....and tupperware...:!rolling::kiss::angel:;):idea::nono::joker:

Are these capsules or liquid? I give wild pacific salmon oil to my guys but it doesn't say if it is Sockeye.

Can we get more info on the Fountain of Youth? Where to buy, etc. I can handle the second puppyhood, even if there are three seniors in our house.

Have you tried starting acupuncture and chiropractic? Brooke started acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments. Really has perked her up. My vet and specialist assessed her and for age thought in good shape. My area we have vet specialist who does the acupuncture and chiro.

I have been preaching about the merits of sockeye salmon for years now and I am thrilled with each new convert.

The sockeye salmon and sockeye salmon oil is special for several reasons:

> It is never farmed;

> It is virtually mercury free, partly because it comes from the Pacific Northwest and partly because sockeye are at the bottom of the food chain; this is very important as most fish oils are heated and even distilled to get rid of the heavy metals and heat destroys the omega-3;

> It contains very high amounts of astaxanthin, the red colour; this is a marvelous anti-oxidant with many health benefits but most important is prevention of cancers of all types; this means that younger Newfs who are not being fed herring or sardines (which have high levels of selenium) should also get the SSO;

> It has one of the highest levels of natural omega-3; other fish oils may seem to have more omega-3 but that is because the oil has been concentrated and this involves heating it which as I mentioned above destroys the omega-3;

> No chemical preservatives are needed as the astaxanthin is a natural preservative; many fish oils for dogs contain chemical preservatives and which often are not even declared on the label.

I recommend Vital Choice because it is one of only two brands that I am aware of that is "unrefined" and the only one available on-line.

For those of you in the US you can also get the same from North American Herb & Spice under the brand name Polar Power: http://www.p-73.com/ . There is a store locator on the website.

The Dr. Mercola site also sells the Vital Choice SSO capsules under the name "Virgin Salmon Oil"; I got this tip from Ginny who discovered the product and found it was less expensive.

In Canada we can get Gold Seal SSO. While it is not quite as good as the unrefined product, it is still the next best thing. It is sold at President Choice Superstores like Loblaws, No Frills, Zehrs and Independent. The bottle says "Wild Salmon Oil" and underneath that it states "100% Pure Sockeye Salmon".

Currently the Gold Seal SSO is on sale until December. A bottle of 120, 1000 mg capsules is $9.99 instead of the usual price of $16.99. This lower price is supposed to last until December, 2013.

I get mine from Vital Choice. It's the liquid pet version. They no longer have it listed on their website but if you call them, they'll happily fill your order. I love this product and the Company itself.

The usual dose is 1000 mg per 20 lbs of body weight per day.

If your dog can tolerate it (not get diarrhea), then you can give as much as 1000 mg per 10 lbs of body weight; I do this for my seniors since the high dose really helps their mobility.

Peter - what are your thoughts on krill oil? In looking up the salmon oils you recommend, I've come across a lot of sites and posters who state that krill oil is a good alternative.
As always, I appreciate all your insight and your help.

Krill oil is higher in astaxanthin than SSO but is lower in the good omega-3's, EPA & DHA, so on balance I prefer SSO.

Krill oil is also much more expensive than sockeye oil and thus most people end up giving less of the oil which undoes the benefits of the increased astaxanthin and really lessens the amount of omega-3's going to the Newf. However if money is no object....

Just ordered some Sockeye from Vital Choice for my old gal after reading this thread. Thank you. She's seeming stiffer these days. I estimate her age to be 12 or 13 at this point. In great shape but slowing down.

Mary,
How much of the Salmon Oil have you been giving daily? Did you buy the 'pump' bottle or the capsules? I see Vital Choice offers a 1000 mg capsule but at Peter's suggested dosage, for my 2 Newfs. I'd be giving 13 capsules, a day. A 90-ct bottle wouldn't even last a week. Just curious....
