Smelly Dog

Brody the Newf

With frequent brushing Brody usually does fine without having a bath in the winter. This year for some reason is different, his coat is wicked oily and he smells like a dog.

We found out that Petco has a room for people to groom their own dogs. Amazing idea right? The only thing is Brody has only been hosed off in the yard and has never stepped paw into a grooming tub.

Armed with treats we tried to bribe Brody to get into the tub. He bucked, whined, scratched and twisted out of our grip. Curt claims he benches 250 pounds at the gym but he couldn't lift Brody off the floor to place him in the tub.

A groomer came in to show us how to get Brody in the tub. By this time, Brody's eyes were literally red and he had drool flying out of his mouth. The poor dog was petrified and Curt thought he was ready to bite the groomer so we stopped trying.

As we were driving home with our smelly dog, I could have kicked myself for not introducing Brody to a tub when he was a puppy.

As a new newf owner, I have been delighted with how much Zaylz does not smell like a dog until the last few weeks. She just turned 1, but I have never taken her to the groomers. She doesn't have mats, but she is a little smelly too. Any suggestions on something to use without giving her a bath would be great.

Brody, Meet Zeke. I think you two have a lot in common.
Zeke is 160 pounds of the biggest chicken sh!t Newf you'll ever see. He won't even go up or down stairs.......They're way too SCARY! :shocker:

LOL! Brody isn't usually afraid of things though! He's dead tired today so I'm guessing trauma is the only thing that can tire him out.

I'm thinking of getting waterless shampoo tomorrow to give it a try. As soon as we get one warm day, I'm breaking out the garden hose though!

Poor Brody...Scary stuff these bathtubs.

We have had a couple of rescue's who obviously never did the bathtub.

We started quietly with not the bath/wash in mind, but just the getting into the bath as the end result. So we did a few non wash trips, where we only quickly got into the bath with some help and treat, quiet time and out again. We did this about five times with Zacky. The Pet shop store thought we were mad. But one thing at the time. when he jumped in himself, we gave him a short version bath, feet only and number seven bath was the whole version. Initially we only toweled Zacky too. because he hated the dryer, but that also was done in increments and in the end he loved a bath/dryer and all.
Good luck, it will take time and patience :) Ronnie

waterless shampoo does help, and smells great...but...If you have only used an outside hose on Brody....do you blow dry him thourally? He will not dry 'on a nice sunny day'....and will no doubt get a fungus on his skin that is the cause of the stink.. Maybe an actual groomer has an easier tub to get in...and can use a medicated shampoo on him....he is such a pretty boy.

You know, it never occurred to me that it could cause problems if I didn't introduce our dogs to bathtubs. We are fortunate enough to have a full bathroom in the basement. It's not attractive, but it has a very large walk-in shower which is big enough for a person and the dog they are bathing, works a treat! Now I hope we never have to move.

Maybe Brody could learn that the bathtub is a fun place somehow? Coax him in and give him a treat, etc? Our local Pet People has a bathing room. While it has large tubs it also has a huge walk-in area with nozzles that sound like they'd work well for Brody.

Can you find out if they will let you bathe him on the floor? Near a drain, obviously. If that doesn't work, try doing it in your garage in a big plastic kiddie pool. You won't do an excellent job, obviously, but you can get most of him done!

The last outside shower he had was in October. He was toweled dried and then we took a ride with the windows down (poor persons dryer). Would fungus on his skin only start smelling now?

He doesn't have a strong smell (at least to me because I live with him) it is mostly his fur that feels super oily.

I never thought bathing him would pose a problem. He's so good with a hose, I figured he'd be good in a tub. He'd be fine if it was a bathing room so I'll have to check and see if they have one around here.

Also, the bathtub was barely big enough to hold a Newf. I think we would have had a problem even if he did cooperate.

Poor sweetie. He was so upset.

Good idea or maybe I can just bring him to Nessa.

Heidi, one word: BACON. Just sayin'.

We managed to bathe Poppy in our bathtub, and used bacon to wheedle her into it. Of course, she kept jumping back out and my bathroom was a lake by the time we were done. but we did manage to get her washed. ONCE.

NN Nana was just asking about Brody the other day !!! For those of you who don't know, he was the original "monkey doodle" :D

Sorry.. back to topic... if it were summer I would suggest bathing him outside like I have done with Murph. I do however realize this is of absolutely no help to you at this time. :darn:

I could have thrown a steak in the tub and he would have ignored it. He was past the point of any treat working for him.
Too bad Nicky lives so far away. We can't keep her out of the bathtub! She thinks it's a fabulous place to hang out.

I have always wished our master bath had one of those great big spa type tubs but since house was built in '69 no such luck. It does however have a larger than normal walk in shower which is what I use for the dogs. In the last few years (we've been here since '74) I put a shower stool in there so I can sit and work which helps my back. It's a little crowded with Thunder but he seems to like it OK. It did have 2 shower heads and we put one of those hand helds on the lower head. Drying is the issue and so we don't do it often. I think Ronnie probably has the solution for you but obviously that will take time. I would dearly love to find a place that had do it yourself WITH A DRYER

Newfs have a double coat...in nature they stay dry at skin level...conversely, when you FORCE water into the coat to bathe them, They cannot dry sufficiently at skin level..without a blow dryer....The dampness and moisture that remains can cause oder and skin problems.
