Should I consider Insurance?

We have insurance for our Newf and like most of the other posters...we did not have it for previous dogs and paid a lot of money out of pocket when our one lab developed bloat, had GI bleeds and terrible allergies. We have VPI and we selected it because you could customize the policy for the amount of coverage that you want. It is cheaper to get when they are a puppy. You can get quotes and compare the different coverages based on some general info that you enter at the start.

Don't be intimidated by the computer. If you PM me, I would be happy to walk you through step by step for whatever plan you are interested in. I also imagine that you could call and have them send you the information by snail mail. :)

For those here that have VPI, does it cover anything dysplasia related like med's? I am definitely getting it for Maggie after adding up what I paid for my Lab in vet bills. Thankfully, I've been going to my vet for about 19 years ( since high school!) so they let me make payments on her surgeries, xrays, etc but I still think insurance is the way to go this time.

Should I be more concerned about them covering cruciate injuries than the dysplasia?

Check out to http://www.petinsurancereview.com/ and VPI at http://www.petinsurance.com/

I was trying to find out the answer for you, but VPI's site is slow today.

Assuming it's okay to mention the insurance companies by name (or is it advertising?), does anyone here have Petplan? They had the highest ratings in the review website listed above.

In looking over their info, it looks pretty good. I would ask if they cover genetic issues in certain breeds (hips). It looks like they do cover vet exams which is good. Ask if their deductible starts over with every illness or is it once per year. I can't remember why I didn't go with Petplan now. It also looks like there is a limit per year of about $8000 which isn't bad, but if your dog has a terrible illness or accident, one could easily go over that.

After doing research I chose Embrace. Here is a good place to go to compare pet insurance companies:
http://www.petinsurancereview.com

I am very happy with Embrace. I pay $45 a month, but I chose how much the deductible is, how much coverage for the year, I added prescription coverage, etc. My boy had surgery for his eyelid; an $800+ surgery cost me about $200.

I have payments taken out automatically. They are very easy to work with; paperwork is straightforward... the statements are very clear as to what was covered and how much you have left for the year.
