Should I consider Insurance?

We never got doggie insurance for our last sweet dog and when he started having problems we were in shock at how much vet bills could be. Does anyone here actually have insurance? Would I be smart if I should consider looking into one?

I did have insurance for Chance, from VPI. I got it right after Chelsea went to the bridge when I realized how much things can cost, and I didn't want to have to make a decision only based on money. I figured if I had some coverage it could help. Some insurance companies have breed surcharges and of course there's one for Newfoundlands with VPI. It did cover his heart problems, accupuncture for spondylosis and other things. Whether I paid out more in premiums over the six years I had the policy, than I got in reimbursements I don't know. His premium when he was 12 years old was a little over $55 a month. But then again there was the peace of mind having the policy also.

Many of us on NN have insurance...we've had it for close to five years and it has really helped. Not everyone has several thousand $$$ sitting in the bank for an emergency; this last January and February we had two surgeries on two dogs and those alone came to over six thousand. Not counting the close to $1500 in diagnostics over a months time to try to help Max. The insurance paid more than half and my vet takes payments.

I have Insurance for Thule and two cruciate ligament surgeries later (and $5,000++) I'm still solvent! Company paid 80% of the costs.

I'll never have another pup without it; and will probably get it for my next kitten.

if you do really check for fine print and know what you are getting . some are cheaper for a reason, only cover accidents or dont cover this or that. sometimes with the insurance $2or 5 can make a difference.

My policy is expensive but covers everything and there is no cap on what they will pay out in a life time. It even pays out on yearly exams and heartworm. They dropped the % they would pay from 80 to 50 in the summer because of the number of claims I have submitted. (claims risk assesment) Still, they have paid out way more than me will never get rich off of my Murphy. If you decide to get it do it early.. then they can not refuse to cover for a pre exsisting condition. And read the fine print !!!

Based on what everyone on NN said we bought insurance for Thunder. We have never had it for any of our others. Haven't used it yet, Trupanion but it does provide some reassurance.

I'm not sure how to respond back with more questions about insurance. not sure now to do it right on the computer. I'm not computer savvy. Has anyone the ASPCA Insurance? for 40$ a month. For 5$ more they cover if a problem re-occurs.

I have insurance on a 5 of mine. Riser's papaloma surgery, etc was $606 and the insuance paid $485 of it (80/20). It also paid for his regular exams, tests, inoculations, heartworm and tick preventative. All in all, insurance has covered my annual premiums on everyone so far. Never gonna get rich :) but I will never have to forgo treatment for $$$$

I don't have insurance, but I put a percentage of my paycheck away every week for emergencies. And I have one credit card that is empty and used only for emergencies also.

I never had insurance for any of my dogs. But what i do is put a certain amount aside every week. It builds up quickly & there is always cash on hand when needed. Most vet offices want payment up front anyways, so you have to have the money anyways. So far this worked out well for us.

Pay the extra and go for the insurance policy that covers for reoccurring problems.

The cheaper insurances will only cover the condition for a year and then the following wont cover it,

Beaus policy is for $6000 every condition and is a lifetime condition policy and as they have paid out over $7000 in less than 15 months I've had my moneys worth already

We have Trupanion on Darcy. They have paid what the policy states with no questions. BUT, I didn't read the policy closely enough. They do not pay for vet exams, even emergency exams. And, the deductible is not yearly, but rather for every new illness/accident. That can be a large amount of money if you have several small things occur because the deductible is charged against each new problem! We just got PurinaCare on our 6-year-old Great Pyr as it covers most genetic-related conditions such as hips, whereas most other insurance companies do not. And, PurinaCare's deductible is once per year, on the anniversary of the policy inception date.

I have ASPCA and have been happy with it. I had Pet Care before, but the $75 deductible per incident got to be ridiculous after a while.
