Shampoo revisited

Since it's been at least a couple weeks since someone brought it up :D:D, I thought I'd revisit the shampoo/conditioner topic. (And yes, for newfs, not humans. LOL. )

Let's go with this--
1. Do you use conditioner AND shampoo when you bathe and if so, every time?

2. What shampoo brand(s) do you use? Conditioner?
Especially interested to hear from those who bath very frequently--(we do, since we are doing water work at least once or twice a week and we bathe after every lake visit)

3. What is your average "dirty to clean & dry" time?

-Mike

I'll even answer my own post, too. :)
1 & 2. We actually rotate shampoos, sometimes use Tropiclean, sometimes we'll even use one of our show shampoos.... and we condition probably ever other time, using same listed above.
3. Too long. 3 or 4 hours, I think........ need 3 dryers going at once probably. :)

Good question! I'm really excited to hear the answer since I'm new to this whole thing.

Right now I have this home-made bar soap (ingredient list says: goatsmilk, tea tree oil, lavender oil, plus cedarwood, peppermint and eucalyptus to help repel mosquitos). I have such a hard time getting a good lather!

I haven't used conditioner but Gilly has really itchy skin (no evidence of hot spots, fleas or dry/flaky skin) so maybe I need to be using a conditioner and/or a soothing shampoo. Where do I find this stuff? Couldn't find anything that looked good at PetSmart or the boutiques. She gets bathed fairly often (every two weeks or so) mostly because she gets covered in mud/dirt or when my seasonal allergies are really bad.

Doesn't take too long because she's still small. I use a salon grade human-dryer on cool shot after toweling her as best I can. Works while she's small and until I can invest in a real dryer.

We use a shampoo and condition from Spectrum labs Silk collection. Seems to work OK, I think others on here use it because this is where I got the name.

I use tropiclean and Panagenics. The tropiclean papaya plus has conditioner in it, I love the way it makes their coats feel and smell. With the Panagenics I use the conditioner on their feathers, pants, and chest. My guys get washed at least once a week because of water training too. Takes about 4 hours each.

I don't know how you do it; washing the dogs after every waterwork. Are the waters really that dirty over there??

We use either a mix of Jean Peau volume and JP Elegance (for blacks) or Groomer's Edge midnight white and GE re-fur-bish (for browns). We tried Panagenics, it was good for a black coat (not for brown), but it was just as good as JP, so we continue to use JP as we can get it easier. We wash the dogs usually between 3 months (show break) to 1 week (for shows) interval.

I use coat handler hypo shampoo and conditioner. I love it but I want to use something that smells, also.

I'd be VERY careful using both eucalyptus and tea tree oil. Usually they're okay, but for some people (and I would assume dogs), they can develop a pretty serious allergy to the stuff. (A friend's son developed long term alopecia after using tea tree oil.) As much as I love the stuff myself, it may not agree with certain people (2 or 4 legged).

four hours per dog! good lord! i guess i never timed our sessions. but they are not more than two hours...he is only 60 lbs right now though so i suppose when he's twice as big it will take twice as long!

Varies from dog to dog here....Sophie has very dry skin/hair and seems to get a lot of dandruff. I deep condition her every time I shampoo....I use Coat Handler products.
She takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours start to finish since her coat is thin and she dries quickly.
Hannah, the mini newf, takes almost five hours since her coat is massively thick and tangles easily. She gets a detangling type finishing rinse every time.
Gabriel is somewhere in between...Normal coat with no skin issues. About four hours start to finish. Shampoo and conditioner for him too as he suffers from "brillo butt"

We use either a chlorhexiderm shampoo (if the dog smells "funky" and can do with a medicated shampoo), or we use diluted down "Prell". I love how Prell, when diluted, cleans and shines and leaves the dogs smelling great!

I use Chris Christensen's ICE ON ICE spray on, leave-in conditioner...both on the dogs and on my hair! Great for taming frizzies and static.

Usually takes about a day and a half for the dogs to completely dry, after a bath...and that's if I use the doggie blow-dryer. If they drip dry, it's minimum of two days, before they're dry down to the skin.

I have baths to do later today. I got in later yesterday from lake. Takes me about 3 hrs home coming in training with group. I don't always clean up until next day. Mine smell like dryed lake water. Most of lakes here have mud, sand, gravel bottoms and lots of boaters on lakes. Churns that up into the coats. Stink and cases where don't clean it out skin problems result.

I use tropiclean and Panagenics. The tropiclean papaya plus has conditioner in it, I love the way it makes their coats feel and smell. Wondered about the Papaya. May have to try it. I use the Berry. Like the way smells and cleans. Then I use the Kava Conditioner or Naked Care Conditioner.

I haven't been able to make myself buy the Panagenics for over $100. Have spent thousands recently on dog sports gear, but such expensive shampoo put me over the edge on financial guilt :D

May buy Panagenics eventually. Busy experimenting with different shampoos. Have not yet read anybody rave long-term that Panagenics is the ultimate.

Orka is in a river / creek / bay / lagoon / ocean almost every evening. He comes home and sleeps on the kitchen ceramic tile floor in front of his Vornado fan. Powerful fan. By morning he is dry with dirt piles all around him. He turns himself every which way in front of the fan.

I groom him every day and he is professionally groomed about once a month including bath. I've been bringing shampoos to experiment.

Want something that leaves him smelling great, even the belly, and degreases. His skin can be a bit sensitive and sometimes after a bath his scrotum turns red. Haven't tried a shampoo yet that left me clapping with 100% satisfaction.

I've heard that too and just can't bring myself to buy and try.

For shows I now been using Plush Puppy products. I used to use shampoo and products made in Canada but company went out of business which resulted in changing.

You're probably going to laugh at me, but during an emergency bath (Ada was coated in mud) I discovered that I had no more dog shampoo and grabbed the cat shampoo (Propet Tearless cat shampoo). I'm fairly certain that's been better than any of the other shampoos we've tried thus far. :D I've only used it once, though, so I'll have to see if it was a fluke or not.

We don't bathe with shampoo after every swim, maybe after every 3rd swim. We do spritz them down with Listerine/water and rinse after swimming, then blow dry thoroughly.

They get baths once a month, sometimes every two - three weeks in summer depending on how stinky they are. We use Plush Puppy shampoo and conditioner for shows and special events and we use EQyss shampoo in between. I LOVE Plush Puppy conditioner, but I only use conditioner for feathers, pants and tails.

I broke down and bought a bottle of the Panagenics and I love it. I've used it 3 or 4 times now and I fine Obie's coat much easier to manage. I didn't go in "whole hog" with the conditioner, etc. I still have a supply of Ice on Ice and continue to use that as my conditioner. Obie has a famously wiry brillo butt and I've found that I just am not getting the degree of matting and tangles that I used to. So-- I'm sold! I'm also still using a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse on him to ward off hot spots... and knock on wood.. we haven't had any problems this summer.

We do not bathe very frequently.. every 3 or even 4 weeks on average. He gets brushed/combed/raked regularly though.

Dirty to clean and dry... about 2 and 1/2 hours

I don't bathe every time Sam goes swimming. :D Sometimes he has been swimming up to 3x in one week...too much bathing...would never be able to keep it up. I just bathe whenever he seems yucky. One time I went out in 41 degree weather and bathed him in the ocean 'cus my relatives were coming and he smelled awful! :D Seemed easier than doing it in the bathtub and then having to clean whole bathroom.

I don't blow-dry, either...don't haye a dryer. When I worry about him getting a hot spot, I douse him with diluted ACV on his under parts after a swim because that is where he stays damp the longest. When I do bathe, I use Avoderm...the oatmeal kind is the one I like best. Then I spray liberally with diluted ACV. If I use a different kind of shampoo (whatever is handy), i mix 50/50 with ACV and omit spraying step. I love the way the coat feels so silky after using Apple Cider Vinegar, and it's good for killing yeast, too. :) And I love the Avoderm. I never condition while bathing: tried it, didn't like the way it made the hair feel. I just use lots of Ice and Ice when I comb him out. Time to bathe: 25-45 minutes, give or take. The dogwash is great for bathing, too.

Our bathing routine is rather nonstandard, but it works for us, although when Sam's coat is really long, he does not seem to get dry enough...more doggy odor. He is getting a trim-down (not a shave!) for the summer, tho. He swims all year round.

My dogs feel soft and silky after river and lake swimming over here in Australia....I only dry them in Winter. And they air dry in Summer. We never seem to have any skin issues even when they go in our ponds at home. The water must be cleaner :)

But for pre-show wash I use horse products Equinade black shampoo and conditioner. They feel and look great after it.
