After trying many different brands of dog food and not being happy with Thunder's coat I finally ordered him some Salmon Oil capusles from Peter's suggested supplier. What I don't know is dosage. These are 500 mg. and he's 170 lbs. What would be the correct amount?

I'm thinking two caps twice a day. you might want to start with one just to be sure it doesn't cause any upsets. I give Sulley the liquid and he gets two squirts twice and day and pitches a fit if we run out. he loves it.

I give Chloe the human dose. I figure she is about the size of a small human. Thunder would be the size of an average human. I just checked the bottle and mine are 1000 mg each, you are supposed to take 2/day. Hopefully Peter can come on and tell you how much he gives, but in the mean time I would also recommend starting out kind of slow so his tummy can adjust. Maybe start with one a day and work up.

The dose for dogs as recommended by a vet in an article in Dogs in Canada magazine is one 1000 mg capsule per day for each 10 -20 lbs of body weight. However I have found that six 1000 capsules daily works well for most Newfs. Two much might result in loose stools.

I give Mojo 1/8 to a 1/4 of a cup every day and he is 150 pounds. The others get less. Mojo has dry skin and that amount of oil has greatly helped his coat and skin.

Peter, I have been buying canned mackerel for Hot Rod. What are your thoughts on this? I know salmon is better, but not on sale yet.

The canned Jack Mackerel is an excellent food source but ideally should be supplemented with sockeye salmon oil capsules. Salmon is the only fish which has "astaxanthin", the incredible red-coloured antioxident that has many benefits but is particularly special in preventing cancer. The reason for "sockeye" salmon is that it has about eight times more astaxanthin than the other salmon species as well as more omega-3 and no mercury.

Also Jack Mackerel is lower in omega-3, so the SSO capsules will help compensate for this. When feeding a 14 or 15 ounce can of Jack Mackerel I usually add three 1000 mg capsules of SSO.

My guys take 6 1000mg caps a day, (they mostly use the liquid form) and have been doing great on it for years:) Thanks to Peter of course!

Knock wood, it's been a year today since Lu blew her cruciate. She gets 6 pumps of Vital Choice (6000mg) liquid a day. She gets Glycoflex 3 and Ester-C, too. But I think the SSO is what's keeping the other CCL healthy. The others are for the inevitable post-surgical arthritis.
