We feed raw/holistic. Oatmeal, yogurt, safflower oil, blackstrap molasses, Ester-C, Glucosamine, B-complex for breakfast, and every other day, they get either a couple of tablespoons of raw mashed fruit, or an egg (shell and all).
Dinner is raw meat (ground beef or beef heart, turkey, or chicken, a tiny bit of liver; salmon or tuna once a week)...and they get an a couple tablespoons of an assortment of seasonal veggies (which have gone through the food processor) with the meat. To this, I add apple cider vinegar, brewer's yeast, wheat germ and bran, cod liver oil, and dried kelp.
Pretty much the diet in Wendy Volhard's book.
We've been feeding this way for almost a year. The biggest change was in our elderly lab mix. She has lost more weight; the "clouds" have all but cleared from her old eyes; and the biggest change...she's gone from 0.8 mg of soloxine twice a day, down to 0.3 mg twice a day. We were able to reduce it by more than half...AND she got back a little of her "spunk", too.
This is a lot more work (and money) than putting down a bowl of kibbles, but SO worth it.
We also take the dogs to a holistic vet, who is certified in acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, and practiced "regular" vet medicine for 26 years. Maggie goes to swim therapy every week for her displastic hips.
