Raw feeders

For you totally raw feeders, what do you feed your dogs? How many meals a day? Do you separate protein from veggies?

How many use chiropractic and accupuncture?

Yes I feed totally raw. Two meals per day. Veggies with protein mixed. Supplements too. This is my first go around with raw, even though I have had Newfs and other dogs all my life. Newfs for the past 12 years. Saddust(Karen) is really so well versed on all of this. She is my mentor who has helped me make the change over for all my dogs. I have been doing this now for almost 2 years. My older dog was not raised on raw, but made the switch quickly with NO problems in stools or stomach upset. She is the biggest reason I did it, she has terrible allergies, and everything I read and researched pointed to a change in diet. SO.... at the age of 9 and a half, she was changed over. Still has allergies, BUT everything about her is SO MUCH BETTER> PM Saddust she is a BUSY person right now, but she always is so helpful and will steer you in the right direction.

Cissy,

I have been feeding raw for over 5 years now. I was just curious to see how many totally raw feeders we had here at NN.

I am also curious as to which of the raw diet regimens people use.

We feed raw/holistic. Oatmeal, yogurt, safflower oil, blackstrap molasses, Ester-C, Glucosamine, B-complex for breakfast, and every other day, they get either a couple of tablespoons of raw mashed fruit, or an egg (shell and all).

Dinner is raw meat (ground beef or beef heart, turkey, or chicken, a tiny bit of liver; salmon or tuna once a week)...and they get an a couple tablespoons of an assortment of seasonal veggies (which have gone through the food processor) with the meat. To this, I add apple cider vinegar, brewer's yeast, wheat germ and bran, cod liver oil, and dried kelp.

Pretty much the diet in Wendy Volhard's book.

We've been feeding this way for almost a year. The biggest change was in our elderly lab mix. She has lost more weight; the "clouds" have all but cleared from her old eyes; and the biggest change...she's gone from 0.8 mg of soloxine twice a day, down to 0.3 mg twice a day. We were able to reduce it by more than half...AND she got back a little of her "spunk", too.

This is a lot more work (and money) than putting down a bowl of kibbles, but SO worth it.

We also take the dogs to a holistic vet, who is certified in acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, and practiced "regular" vet medicine for 26 years. Maggie goes to swim therapy every week for her displastic hips.

I feed my 5 month old Bravo for one meal and chicken or turkey with pureed veggies for the second meal. He also gets fruit, oatmeal and eggs in place of the chicken once a week. He also gets a mixture of cod liver oil and salmon oil.

We feed raw here as well. We switched last spring to see if it would help Angus. He was happier and feeling better, eating better once we switched until the end. At that point I switched the other 2 as well.

These guys get Bravo blend one meal, and chicken backs and neck, mackerel, or turkey necks the other meal. We don't feed much beef, as we had stinkey ears when I was. On the whole, everyone is happy and healthy and coats have improved. Mudji's coat looked really dull when he was on kibble, no matter what he was being fed.

With Weezie, we have had chiropractic and acupuncture before the TPLO surgery. The vet we are seeing at the moment is traditionally trained, but prefers to practice holistically. We actually met her when Angus crossed Rainbow Bridge.

I think the koolest thing about raw is that they are SO excited to eat.. I am followed around with happy dances until I feed them.

Raw here, Billingshurst, no grains, for Dudley.
Used to feed Gracie and Sophie raw but changed to kibble for various reasons.
Dudley gets chicken necks and backs, lean ground beef, beef heart and liver, eggs, tuna alternating.
Veggies are pureed Bok Choy, and carrots alternating with rutabago.
Supplements are Vit C and E, Kelp, Alfalfa, Codliver oil, Flax oil, Apple cider vinegar (the others get that too), Yoghurt, Garlic pills.

Yes, I've used acuncture and chiropractor and also Osteopath (cranial/sacral specialist) with some of them, regular vet and also holistic vet for some health issues.

As some of you may have been reading, I am in the procees of switching to raw--no grains and with veggies. I am feeding bravo blend in the morning (turkey and beef) and chicken backs and veggie mush in the evening. Well, this is the plan, anyway...I have it all written out to slowly introduce new foods. My golden has some skin allergies, so I am trying to figure all that out. Still working on the suppliments--it is great to see what others use! This board has been a great resource for me in these first few weeks of newf-dom!!!
