Questions about fostering for Newf Rescue

I am considering fostering for rescue. I am in the Chicago area. Does anyone know who I would contact?

Also, for any of you who have fostered... Do you know if a fenced yard is mandatory? I live in a condo... And Murphy gets walked on leash for potty breaks.

Thank you!

Hey Jess,

Are you thinking Newf fostering or all breed?

For Newf Rescue I believe the contact for your area is Mary Price rescue@newfdogclub.org

Each rescue has different policies around fencing, and the needs of each foster dog differ, so it's worth contacting your local rescue to see how you can help.

:groovy::groovy:That's great Jess. Hope it all turns out OK and then, just maybe, you'll become a foster failure:kgo_027:

I'm pretty sure fencing is a requirement, at least for SCNC. Maybe Susan Kerby will chime in. You'd be an awesome foster mom:) Kim

Thanks guys! Sandra- I'm in the process of "convincing" my landlord that Newfs are a safe, friendly breed. He is OK with me having a dog that size but is going to speak with the condo HOA to see if they will lift the weight restriction (it's a small condo complex and lots of dogs live here... I just saw a Bullmastiff puppy the other day a street over). I'm hoping they will give me the ok... And I was thinking fostering might be a nice way to get back on the saddle after the loss of Gabe. We will see what happens! BUT... I do not have a big yard- just grassy common grounds and a park nearby. All dogs have to be leashed and attended to at all times in the complex. No fencing... No tie outs... No off leash play. But there are lots of parks within walking distance. I just don't know what rescue's requirements are. Fingers crossed!!!

While a fenced yard is nice, I truly don't think it should be make or break. My newfs *never* spend much time in our fenced yard. They like to be indoors with us or out in the world on a walk or hike or at a dog park.

I think if you explain you are an experienced large breed owner and are already in the habit of walking your dog ~ they might not see it as an issue. Or perhaps they would place an adult or older dog with you who is lower energy and doesn't need multiple off leash zoomies during the day and will be happy on leashed walks.

GL! Exciting ....

Years ago I did a foster but failed after about 10 minutes ... it was true newf love. I stuck to just helping with giving rides.

Best of luck!!! I so hope some lucky Newf gets you as his/her foster..or foster failure. I just fear the decision of the HOA. Some of them can be so rigid, they can't see what is in front of them...even if it is a sweet, wonderful Newf. They just see a dog over their pre-set weight restrictions. Keeping my fingers crossed for the HOA to get over themselves and you find a rescue without fencing requirements.

I would think that any rescue would take your past newf experience, and the recommendation of fellow "newfers", and be glad to have you!

Given your current housing situation, one would hope that they could waive the fence requirement. We didn't have a fenced yard, either, and have fostered. Our dogs never go outside without us, anyhow.

Good Luck!

Good to hear that you are looking for a wonderful newf to possibly join you and Murphy.....Good luck. Just remember that being a Foster Failure is never bad. being a Foster success is not bad, so you cannot fail :)

How long have they had the weight restriction? I can tell you that I live in a condo with a weight restriction and approval is merely a formality. But that's because I had a Newf BEFORE they enforced the rule...
