Purebred Rescue Need Advice

I'm new here and looking for a little advice. We had a newf/lab mix that passed about a year ago. He was a perfect addition to our family. We had rescued him too. We will only have a newf as a new addition. Anyway I came across this 4 year old newf who is in desperate need of love and attention. He is truly neglected! They say that when he was a pup he got a yeast infection from getting neutered. He was put in the back yard at that point and pretty much forgotten about. Well now at around 4 he still has that yeast infection and has lost quite a bit of his hair. They also say he smells real bad too. 'oh my poor luv!!' Well seems the person I will be getting him from had the dog dumped on her because the son was unable to care for it anylonger due to the daughter being allergic. She is trying real hard to help him heal but unfortunately she was sick for like 3 weeks so he was not fed properly and his weight has gone down to 88lbs. He looks so sad! The advice I'm after is do you in your experience think I will be able to get him to the way he deserves to be? He so looks like he needs lots of luv and attention. On the upside we have a 13 acre farm where he will never be kenneled. The main house property is fenced with chain link so he is free in that area (about 1 acre or so) We also have a creek for daily swimming. Our other newf just absolutely luv'd that!!! Any advice as to how I can help him heal and get rid of that nasty infection would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh..should have mentioned he has been to the vet and is on antibiotics along with a special shampoo for the yeast infection.

Oh, the poor boy.
Can you afford the vet bills to treat his skin conditions and to get him back the way he should be? If so, I would say.........go get him, pamper him, and give him the life he deserves, and bless you for wanting to save him.

Its difficult to tell, not seeing his true condition, but dogs do recover really well with the right TLC. One thing to keep in mind is that if he has a compromised immune system from the yeast and years of neglect, it may be a long term battle getting him healthy. You don't say where your located, but please know that Newfoundlands do not do well as outdoor dogs. They need to be with their people, and if he already had skin issues, it will be a longer battle with him getting wet in your creek on a daily basis.

I highly recommend you contact your local Newfoundland club for local assistance in learning what the best way to care for him is. The local Newfoundland Rescue in your area could also help guide you, as to his future care and what has worked for others surrendered in similar conditions. Its very sad to see them come in like this, but when they get better it is just beautiful to see them get that spark back in their eyes.

Bless you for rescuing him, and please don't hessitate to ask questions, and discuss options with his care. It sounds as though he is going to have a very good new begining!

.....I guess I got a little ahead of myself with the creek situation. In the future when he is healed, he'll have a great time! In the winter it's a bit to high to swim but in the summer......whoo hoo!!!! Look-out!! I, as you Susan think it's best to keep his skin dry until it is healed. Yes we will keep him with us...the other dog was the same way. Never wanted to leave our side. You see both dogs have/had lived in tiny kennels with igloo houses but not with us. He will be free to explore but that usually means with hubby everynight as he walks the property. Nightly ritual. Him and the other dog were inseperable. I'm hoping for the same luck here. I just feel Oscar so badly needs us and we'll do whatever it takes to get him healthy!

Congratulations! Remember to take pics. Looking at those "before" and "after" shots of the many rescues we've seen at NN...is just heartwarming. A good vet, some meds, and lots of TLC works wonders.

It sounds like you are just what Oscar needs in his life.

Ok.....mind you he's not to pretty right now but he is still such a luv!! This is the photo I got from the lady who has him. That stuff on his chest....(sigh!) that is his skin. He has lost alot of hair. The vet said it is starting to grow back though.

He sounds wonderful, and if he has skin problems please don't be afraid to feed him the very best food you can afford. It made a huge difference in my Newf who was already on "good" food (Eukanuba and Science Diet) to excellant food like Canidae and Eagle Holistic. Both are corn and wheat free without preservatives and my Newf had terrible skin problems until I switched. Now his coat and skin shine with health and the rest of him too!

I'm with Lisa.......get him on some good food. Not food from the grocery store. You can find a lot of food threads here.

Also...have you heard of Nzymes? A member of a Newf list had a horrible problem with her dog and yeast.....to the point of almost losing the dog. Someone recommended Nzymes, which turned things around miraculously. I still have the email from the list, and have gotten permission to share it if you'd like to see it. I can PM it to you.

Anyway.....here's the Nzymes link. You can also contact the owner of the site for additional advice. I know they recommend Eagle Pack Holistic food when trying to combat systemic yeast problems:

Oscar is a very handsome boy. It sounds as though he'll be very lucky to share your family.

He'll probably feel like he's in heaven getting to share your home and maybe even your nice warm bed!!!
