Puppy coat - lack of it

Hmm , I'm starting to get worried - my pup is 5 1/2 months old and has a very thin puppy coat - all her brothers and sisters have very thick fluffy coats - but hers is like cotton wool and deminishing by the day!

Does this (IYO) have any bearing on her adult coat and what it will be like?

I have no experience or idea, but especially if its diminishing it seems like something to ask your vet about, if you haven't already. It could be a hormone imbalance or related to the allergy you mentioned in the previous post or to something else. Can you see her skin through the fur? I'd be interested in seeing a picture.

I will ask my vet on our next visit - just wanted a few other opinions - No,you can not see the skin through her coat - its just a very short puppy coat - I've never had this before and wondered if anyone else has and what the adult coat ended up like

Never experienced this so can't offer any advice. You might try joining Newf-L or Newf tech (if they are still around) and asking on that list. There are more breeders on there that might have more experience with this.

The only thing I can add is that my brown female has had a puppy coat like I'm not used to dealing with on my black male. She's looked like a chocolate lab more than a Newf. But, her parents all have normal coats and as time passes, I do see it still changing.

A picture might help in determining what you actually mean by lack of puppy coat, but normally you won't need to worry about it.

I actually do not see all that much difference in the coat between the two. I do, however, see a difference in the two pups structures which may be giving you the appearance of just a thinner coat.

You are right that a little different angle might make the dog look different especially when comparing one picture to another. Does one have course hair and the other a smoother coat? I really do not see a lot of difference in the coats in the pictures though. I don't see anything to worry about, so I would not worry. They are beautiful pups!

The first one has a very dense fluffy,2inch thinck - usual puppy coat - the second has a very thin,1/2 inch thick - cotton wool like puppy coat
