Puke burps! (gross but true)

So I switched Moose from Blue Buffalo to Purina Pro Plan Shredded, and he's done good on it for a few months...

but now I'm noticing that he's gassy and he'll burp and puke up whole pieces of food hours after eating. He's not sick, he hasn't stopped eating, drinks normal amounts of water, stool is normal...honestly, it looks like he doesn't chew the food at all. Any other food brands worth trying or any helpful advice?! I just wonder if he's truly getting what he needs from his food if he's not even CHEWING it, he's just inhaling it.

My doggies are on Taste of the Wild and do well with that. Sometimes if they drink too much after eating they will get sick and throw up most of what they have eaten. And...they don't chew either...just the way they are...they all inhale everything. The only way I get them to chew is put something bigger such as green beans or carrots in the food. So much fun isn't it?? LOL.

Glad it's not just him! I'll have to try Taste of the Wild...any specific flavor or bag you feed yours? Does it have those little black nutrient bits in it? That's what put him off of Blue Buffalo - he'd spit out the black pieces, the little turd!

Thanks for the help, as always! :)

try putting either a couple of rocks or tennis balls into the food bowl, it helps slow their eating down.

be happy we have poopsicle burps at times - very gross

Is he eating too fast? Maggie sometimes will suck her food down in an attempt to get her "dessert bone" quicker. I happen to have, through no knowledge of how it happened, a lot of those small containers you may or may not get at a restaurant, and I turn one over and put it in her bowl to slow her down.

Indeed - I will take what comes out of the front rather than the back end any day! I'll have to put something less appealing than a rock or a ball though. We are talking about a dog who eats bark for fun...and constantly has a toy in his mouth.

I think some of those might magically be in my house too... ;) I'll have to try that! And if I can't find one, well then I guess I have an excuse to go out to eat...

So it's not just my dog! And Griffin doesn't chew either. Especially smaller treats. I'm pretty sure they don't even touch his tongue.
Glad I'm not alone! Moose eats bark all the time. Thankfully not rocks (yet) but bark? It's like he thinks someone sprinkled puppy treats all over my yard. I'm glad for the snow, at least it gives him something else to eat (and it's more fun to step in a mouthful of snow on my carpet than on a random woodchip).

Ours will eat bark too! So weird. We have them on taste of the wild as well because it's grain free and we use the pacific stream version because it doesn't have chicken or chicken by products that Turner is allergic to. The fish has done wonders for Willow's coat she used to have a dull coat as it was transitioning to an adult one and now her coat shines!

TOTW does not have the Life Source Bits that's in BB, but be mindful that TOTW is manufactured by Diamond and they've had lots of issues over the years, most recenty with a pretty sizeable Salmonella outbreak (it only affected humans and really, one should be mindful of washing one's hands after handling any dog food). Just an FYI.

What was the main protein source (chicken, salmon, etc.) in the BB versus the PPP Shredded that he's getting now?

Both the BB and PPP Shredded were the chicken based protein. He didn't do good (neither of my boys did) on the PPP Shredded lamb, and they're pretty meh about the beef flavor - which is what I'm currently feeding, but almost out of.

Jake and the gang eat the Pacific variety of TOTW too. They do really well on it. The recalls on the Diamond Plant were all on the East Coast thankfully. I checked mine every time I bought a bag just to make sure. The store I get mine from, "The Dogs Meow" in Draper gets theirs from the West coast. Good luck with Moose, Jake is still eating clumps of grass...and also wood chips from the mulch! That boy EATS everything he can! LOL..

Moose started doing what Jake does and grabbing clumps of grass too! Two peas in a pod...

I'll try the pacific flavor. Does the Dogs Meow sell it cheaper or something?

I don't think dogs can chew. I don't think their jaws can move side to side like ours to chew their food. It only moves up and down. And I don't think they have flat teeth for chewing (like our molars) ... though I'm going to have to check Suki's tomorrow morning. I think they are designed to tear and swallow ....

Pukey burps do sound gross!!!

I had a lot of trouble finding just the right food for Kayak (most of my problems were coming out the other end though and not the burps:eek:) However, now I have discovered NutriSource grain free and LOVE IT!! It's rated really high and Kayak thinks I'm the best mom every now. I give him the grain free salmon and haven't had any more problems since.
I would have never thought to add tennis balls or rocks to slow down eating. I may have to borrow that idea!

A lacrosse ball worked for Zuzu. There are also those anti-bloat bowls.

Kibble can take up to 12 hours to digest (I JUST saw this somewhere - where?) so I would not worry about chewing or not chewing, his stomach is doing what it needs to to the kibble.

Good luck finding a food that works, if you do decide to switch. Everyone's got their favorites and those that didn't work for them or the company that they don't like, but really, what works for you is what is most important.

Ooh, good idea. Yea I saw that somewhere too - made me feel better about the whole food pieces coming up! I may buy small bags of TOTW just to see if he likes it better. If not, we'll stick with the chicken flavored PPP shredded. At least I know it's normal now and not something to be concerned about! Thanks everyone!

I just use a corelle coffee cup in my kids' dish - fits perfectly in the middle and has a wide enough top that it can't be tipped over easily... great for hiding treats under, too!
