Poor Boy in South Jersey...

We met Cody today and had a play date. He is super cute but very aggressive with our dog. He is a big guy, had no training and has had no vet care. He looked like he had and ear infection. The women who owns him told us she needs to make money on him to pay her bills. She is getting a divorce and in the process of leaving her home and can't take him with her. He is a constant barker and runs loose in the neighborhood according to the neighbors. The women stated her other newf got hit by a car. It made me sick that we couldn't take him home with us. Still trying to decide if we should take him and try to make it work. I just don't know if I could handle it....

Poor thing. He needs a rescue and STAT or a super duper patient parent who is ready to work with him for the long haul.

I've had in the back of my mind this guy could be my magic #3 but it's not in the cards for me. If you are seriously still contemplating Cody, here's the name of a customer and great dog trainer.

Maybe have him see you and your family then see if you could go for another visit with him to evaluate the dog. Is he neutered? Cause if he's not I would use that towards the price of the dog, around here once they hit a certain weight the spay & neutering costs a fortune.

Just looking to help this situation in any way possible. If you should need some help please don't hesitate to ask.

I pray she has a change of heart and does what's right for Cody and not her wallet. Sounds like the boy needs to get into rescue where they have the experience with this.

He sounds like a handful and needs total rehab with a skilled foster/trainer and likely as an only dog. Have you been in touch with Rescue? On occasion dogs get pulled by non-rescue folks and immediately turned over to rescue if it is in the best interest of the dog to get it out of an unsafe situation,

This makes me sad. I wasn't able to check on this as I was on vacation last week, and this was the last thing I expected to hear. Can we pay rescue in the form of a donation to take him??

I've been in talks with this woman and she is anxious to get him a home. The pictures she has sent me show a real cutie pie, and her description of his behavior has been angelic. One picture showed him on a walk and it did appear like he was pulling on the leash. Obedience training a definite must there. I asked her what kind of training he's had and she never really answered the question. But she did state she rescued him from a similar situation as her prior dog was hit by a car.

Concerning vet care. Her clinic has faxed over his med info to my vet. What I know presently is he is current on his shots. She stated the asking price is to pay the vet bill and cover his food/toy costs.

I am concerned about his aggression towards other dogs. Is this play aggression or just aggression in general?

Up until this point I was interested and maybe still am. It's just the transportation challenges as I am here in CA. Rescues are equipped in assessing behavior and such and I would definitely feel more comfortable having him properly assessed so I would be able to make a more informed decision. I would appreciate suggestions.

UPDATE..........
Per my vet he had an ear infection 2011 and an infection/small blood clot on his scrotum (related to a neuter) that has since resolved, also in 2011. Nothing else. Nothing on record regarding a heart worm test. The current ear infection mentioned by Meglet was seen by an after hours clinic.

Tara, I am willing to start out the newf train on this end.

If you are looking for a professional assessment of him I would suggest contacting newf rescue (Diane Lynch at NewPenDel, since she's aware of the issue and has spoken with the owner) see if you could arrange a meeting with both of them or hire a dog trainer. The gentleman I suggested above would be honest and straight forward-I'm sure he would charge but not sure how much, but you could always call him. And if you are concerned health wise you could always make an arrangement with a local vet and explain your situation and see what they'd be willing to do to help out. Maybe they'd only charge for the heartworm, lymes tests and not the office visit??

I just received a text from the owner that she found someone else for Codi as she couldn't wait any longer. Maybe she didn't like that I was asking so many questions. I hope he went to a good home.

Almost forgot to thank Dawnmarie for her suggestion. Couple of thoughts... I'm still grieving over Jordan who I lost 3 mos ago. And as much as I thought how wonderful it would be to have another newfy, something just didn't seem right.

He's back on Craigslist. I feel like this boy is going to be one that slips through the cracks, I think his owner just wants $$$.

This would be NewPenDel, right? Has anyone contacted them about getting this poor boy into foster? Would love to know how to help...
