Pool Owners

We are in the middle of having an inground swimming pool built. We were wondering how likely the Newfies are to stay out of it when we let them run free in the back yard. They have a small kiddie pool that they like to lay in when we fill it for them. Will we be cross fencing to avoid wet dogs at the wrong time?

Just look at my video under photos of Riley jumping in our pool. Now my boys want to know when we are moving to your house!

I have my second Newfie, (he is only 7 months) and like our first he doesn't like to get in the pool. We have a lake in front of our home, and they both have LOVED the lake, but want nothing to do with the pool. I wish it was reverse, I would love them in the pool. We have an automatic cover that if you wanted to keep them out you could. If that is a concern, you may look into that.

Murphy does not try to go into Nana's pool when the solar blanket is on it but we are always out there with him just in case.. When the cover is off he generally waits until he is told he can go in. And he is not allowed in the Nana's yard after the winter cover goes on as we are afraid he could slip and fall in and go under it. Especially when it is snow covered.

We never had a pool before our current home. Ours is above ground but there is a deck off the house that leads you right there.

The first week in the new house I let the pups out one night to go potty.

Ten minutes later Yogi is back but Cordy doesn't come and it is DARK so I can't see her. I go out on the deck and call and call, then finally look towards the pool.

There was a suspicious black mound poking up at the ladder. She went in, probably with a flying leap, even with the solar cover on the pool and was quite happy.

Silly Newfies. Keeping them out? I'd rather accept they'd like to go in. I wish we had an inground with stairs because I would TOTALLY let my dogs swim then.

We have an above ground pool built into the side of a hill. We built a ramp that goes up and down so that we can control when the newfs go for a swim. Also, we have a 5ft "moat" around the pool so the newfs can't go in the pool...or so we thought. Our little guy Zacc jumped and cleared the side of the pool...thats right, not only did he jump the 54 inch side of the pool but also the 60 inch moat. We were amazed.

So in short...I'd say it is possible to keep your newfs out of your inground pool...but not probable.

If they like the baby pool, you will probably need fencing up to keep them out of the big pool for your sanity and their safety. Before Henry entered our lives we had one big yard for the dogs and the inground pool. We taught Benson and Glory to use the stairs for entering and exiting the pool. We also taught them to stay out of the pool until permission was granted but for my peace of mind, I still stayed outside when they were outside. I felt that unsupervised swims were just too dangerous.

Then Henry came along and we had a wet landseer every day last summer. He was taught about the stairs but he discovered it was more fun to take a flying leap into the pool. We tried to teach him to wait for permission but when he was hot nothing would keep him out of the water.

Last fall, we redid the fencing in the yard and now we have the dog yard and the pool yard. Henry still goes swimming on a regular basis but on our terms now. It's been very nice not having to dry a dog off at 5:00 AM before leaving for work!!!

I hope you all will enjoy your new pool. We enjoy ours when the weather allows us too. The dogs enjoy it regardless of the weather!!!!

The automatic cover I think is different than the solar cover. Our automatic cover is controled in the pool house with a key to open, or close. When in the open position it will go back down the two sides to the deep end into a contailer.
I forget what the weight that these will hold up, but it is by far more than a Newf would weigh.

About as likely as Osama Bin Laden showing up at a pig roast in Washington DC.

We're in the process of building one too, and I'm gunning for a salt water pool so the boys can go in it without bleaching out their coats!!! There are fencing requirements here for safety, so ours will be fenced - the boys will be attended whenever they go swimming.

We stopped by a friend's house who had a pool a few weeks ago and our guy went in her backyard, smelled her dog, and jumped in the pool. We weren't sure what he would do since he's never seen a pool, but there was no stopping it.

Pools covers terrify me. There aren't many people with pools in the uK, But my neighbour was at a friends party and took there bermese puppy. For some reason there attention was diverted and the puppy fell/ jumped in the pool and went under the pool cover. Fortunately someone saw what happened and got her out, but it was too close for comfort. Not that i'll ever be able to afford one, but if i do i think i'd like it fenced so all swims are authorised and supervised!!!

Me too. Our was NEVER covered and never totally drained. There was always water in it, even if it was solid ice. The 10' end was always full. Clean up in spring was quite an endeavor, but we'd have sparkling clean water in about a week.

Our problem (one of the reasons we took the darned thing out), was that you'd walk out the back door about 10 steps (not exaggerating) and walk right into the deep end of the pool. There was NO way to fence it and still get out the back door.

No...we didn't put it in, it was here when we bought the house. But we did FILL it in...with lots and lots of dirt. Took almost a year to keep adding dirt and letting it settle.

Hopelessly Impossible:roflmao: Seamus has to go to the bottom step just to get a drink! He won't swim, though. He is always wet. I wait until the last time we are in the back yard to blow him dry. I towel dry him at least 3 times a day:lol:
