playing with other dogs

I will start off by saying, how does your newf play with other dogs. I will be getting my newf in a few weeks. I have never had such a big breed dog. So how do they play with other dogs with the size they get.
Is there problems because they are so big and knock the other dogs over?
Is that why alot of you have two so they have someone to play with?

Grayce is actually very good with smaller dogs, especially puppies. Of course, there are very few dogs that I've seen that are bigger than our Delicate Little Flower. She loves wrestling but finding other dogs that are willing to play with her is a little more challenging. Her size can be a little intimidating, and sometimes she doesn't know her own strength. Regardless of who your dogs play with it's always a good idea to keep an eye on them... just in case. And enjoy your new addition!

Snuffles plays well with dogs of all sizes. He tends to know how rough he can be. Generally smaller dogs tend to just sniff and Snuffles just sniffs back. But like at the dog park, Snuffles pretty much lets the other dogs set the tone of the play. Snufles has been exposed to other dogs almost since his moving here from the breeder so he has been very well socialized.

Wash is a little scared around the much smaller dogs. For a medium sized dog, he thinks they are all puppies, I need to keep a close eye on him to make sure he isnt too crazy. He isnt mouthy at all when he is playing but his thing is to just run other dogs over.

They are very good a pinning Basset Hounds.

Poor Floyd - trust me, he had it coming though. Ha! Zoe actually stands over him and holds him down by his ears....seriously.

Floyd aside, they play quite nicely with other dogs (and pigs even) of all shapes and sizes. As with any breed it depends on the individual dog and we just use common sense - if they are getting too wild the game is stopped. Pretty much any dog that visits here is smaller than the Newfs, and our guys are great with them. (Well, ok Zoe needs some reminders sometimes....but the rest are great.) :) Neptune LOVES playing with little dogs, like Jack Russells. It's so funny to watch him getting his ankles bit by the little guys.

Kyra likes to play with all dogs except the very small ones. She's just not sure what they are. She's very gentle with them, she just doesn't play. With other dogs, she asks them to play all out, but if they choose not to, then she plays more gently. She always lets the smaller dogs "win".

Kelvinn is the biggest guy around so all his pals are small.. they get along fine.. and the small dogs are much faster. One Jack Russell bitch is so good at chasing she actually flies under Kelvinn... he always seems surprised LOL. Don't worry the little guys know when to run. Except Floyd maybe LOL.

I have 4 Newfies, but also 2 Poms. They are careful around the Poms, but they need to be supervised just like any other dog. If I can remember tomarrow I will post a couple of photos of them playing.

One of Bojie's best friends is Widget, the shitzu, he's our neighbor and the two have been playing together since I brought Bojie home, because of that, he tends to like playing with little dogs, unless its another Newf...Bojie plays very differently with little dogs vs large ones. He knows Widget is smaller, and is much more gentle with him, but they do play hard, Widget can run circles around him so that helps too. But put Bojie together with Nanook or Pooka, and it's WWF! Newf play is in a whole other category...

Murphy and Ozzy play together pretty rough at the dog park but they are more gentle with the smaller dogs. A small Lhasa Apso gave them holy hell last week and they backed off like it was a pack of rabid wolves. LOLL

Our girls love to play with all dogs - big and small - but when the Pom from next door gets through the fence and plays, she gets a little intimidated by Moonlight (aka Freight Train) and she'll run under Echo, who everybody differs to. Echo will sit and watch the rough housing and Mitzi will peek out between her front feet. Of course, I never have a camera.:banghead:
