Tuggs is having his surgery on wednesday morning ,pain med is given to him during sugery, which pain med to i ask the vet not to give him , and which one is ok to give him during the surgery.

I once told the vet that our dogs were too groggy after their teeth cleaning and can he give them something else and all that. My bill was $300 higher and they acted the same after surgery. If there is something in particular that an owner here knows regarding pain meds for Newfs, I'm sure we'll hear about it. Otherwise, I say just let 'em do it the way they know best! My vet always seems to push Rimadyl, but I always say no. Same thing with Deramaxx. I know some on here have used them successfully, but I don't want to take a chance. Tramadol seems to be a safer (if you can really call any meds safe) but ask the vet to explain any options beforehand so you can know. Good luck and prayers coming for Tuggs.

Be honest with your vet as to what Tuggs has been given as far as any meds that he/she may be unaware of to avoid any unintentional drug interactions and odds are whichever anti-inflammatory/analgesic you choose should be fine. Also, pre-surgical bloodwork can also help with making such decisions. If all is normal, I wouldn't hesitate to use Rimadyl (or generic version, Novox). I have used Rimadyl and now Novox with no ill effects on my Newfs since it arrived on the market 10 years ago or so. I've used Deramaxx on a few (osteosarcoma victims) but they did seem to develop stomach issues. I've probably witnessed much more stomach/GI upset and lethargy from using Tramadol, however, so I'm not so eager to add that to the analgesic protocol for my gang.

Tramadol is a pain killer but not a narcotic while Rimadyl and Deramaxx are in the NSAID family of drugs. While both may give relief for pain - they do it differently so may not be appriopriate for the all pain relief.
