Charlie thinks he’s a sight hound. Our garden is visited daily by Hares which for a while Charlie would look out at and give the odd bark, then he started getting to the point he’d want to be allowed outside to posture and bark and the hares would run off. He would get all proud of himself and on occasion he would give chase which was the equivalent of a Dumper Truck chasing a Ferrari. The hares would be in the next county by the time he got half way up the garden. As times gone on the hares have gotten braver and less inclined to run away as they realise the big guys limitations but this has made him more determined to defend his patch.
The arrival of a new dog recently to the house has also promoted him to village elder and he has started trying to act more grown up and has taken to putting on displays for her. So now he lies in wait every evening as he knows the time they arrive in the garden about dusk. No matter how tired he is he will lie there staring out the window until he is vindicated for his wait and the barking and wimpering starts till he is allowed out to chase them off. Prob is now despite their speed and the fact they are gone before he gets anywhere near them he now doesn’t give up at that point and carrys on into the forrest, through mud etc hoping that somehow he may catch up. crazy dog that he is then comes back all muddy and covered in twigs and bits of forrest, its kinda cute and funny but getting to be a bit of a pain now too. if you don’t allow him out he just runs from room to room barking at every window drooling everywhere and driving us nuts basically! Anyone else’s Newf think they are hunting dogs??
