Our dog thinks he's a sight hound!

Charlie thinks he’s a sight hound. Our garden is visited daily by Hares which for a while Charlie would look out at and give the odd bark, then he started getting to the point he’d want to be allowed outside to posture and bark and the hares would run off. He would get all proud of himself and on occasion he would give chase which was the equivalent of a Dumper Truck chasing a Ferrari. The hares would be in the next county by the time he got half way up the garden. As times gone on the hares have gotten braver and less inclined to run away as they realise the big guys limitations but this has made him more determined to defend his patch.

The arrival of a new dog recently to the house has also promoted him to village elder and he has started trying to act more grown up and has taken to putting on displays for her. So now he lies in wait every evening as he knows the time they arrive in the garden about dusk. No matter how tired he is he will lie there staring out the window until he is vindicated for his wait and the barking and wimpering starts till he is allowed out to chase them off. Prob is now despite their speed and the fact they are gone before he gets anywhere near them he now doesn’t give up at that point and carrys on into the forrest, through mud etc hoping that somehow he may catch up. crazy dog that he is then comes back all muddy and covered in twigs and bits of forrest, its kinda cute and funny but getting to be a bit of a pain now too. if you don’t allow him out he just runs from room to room barking at every window drooling everywhere and driving us nuts basically! Anyone else’s Newf think they are hunting dogs??

I've got the visual...That's too funny!

Similar but different....My 9 yr old used to go from window to window once it started getting dark outside. He would do this about every 30-60 minutes.... kinda doing a "perimeter" check....acting more like what I've heard about Great Pyr's.

Yes. My Newf will chase anything that moves. When she was a puppy, I had to watch for leaves blowing, accidentally kicking a pebble, or even buterflies. I do see her scanning the yard in the morning looking to anything that may have stumbled into her territory overnight.

She has killed a squirrel, two birds that she leapt into the air and caught, and this past weekend she brought me a mole. She doesn't eat or rip them apart, but carries them in the front of her mouth and I think she just wants to play with them and inadvertently kills them. At least that's what I'm hoping.

glad its not just our guy. no hope of catching these guys our new dog is a GSD and miles quicker than Charlie and even she can't get near them. dunno what he would do if by some miracle he caught up. there was a baby hare in the garden recently and this sent him extra loopy, i think he thought he could def catch a little one but no way were we risking it so just put up with his crying and barking until eventually i went out and made the little guy run off and then let Charlie out to show his aithority over all he surveys!!

Willis was born to chase. Leaves, bunnies, lightning bugs, other doggie friends, you name it. I thought the bunnies would be too quick to ever be caught, but I was wrong. To my knowledge he has caught two: one was carried gently in his mouth as he ran around the yard, escaping when I told Willis to drop it; but the other bunny was whopped with a paw when he tried to initiate play and did not fare as well :-(

Actually Newfs were categorized as hunting dogs in England in the 1800's. Many Newfs were painted with fowl, and other game.

Sir Edwin Landseer's Newfoundland and Woodchuck

Ansell's Newfoundland and Gamecock

So chasing Wrabbits, and other Creatures is not that unusual. Oreo loves chasing Wrabbits. As she says "UhUhUhUh....I'se huntin Wrabbits!" in her best Elmer Fudd imitation.

Makes sense, Ted, since they certainly seem to have retrieving instincts. Someone came up to me in a dog park all shocked that my newf retrieved stuff...said they usually were not retrievers.

Sam thinks if it runs, he needs to chase it, and I think he would probably catch it if he could...but that "Dumper truck chasing a Ferrari" (very funny, Skillie!) bit applies to him, too! My cat is safe b/c she has "stickers". And I don't let him chase her anyway.

He especially enjoys terrorizing raccoons...has NO idea what he would be in for if he actually caught one! He may be a gentle giant, but he certainly does not lack for prey drive.

Both Paintings are Old. The first one is atributed to Sir Edwin Landseer. Personally I don't think so, as I would have never picked it up for what I paid for it. Most likely a student, from the original. It was painted in 1870, has the intiials E.L. on it and "1870".

The Second is an original Charles Ansell, flourished towards the close of the 18th century was an English painter also. painted around 1800's. Known as an Engraver, and Painter.

I spend an hour every day (as best I can) scouring art, antique, and other sites, looking for Newf Stuff. I have about 600 Newf antiques/statues/paintings/engravings/etc./etc.
