Orijen 6-Fish communication

Below is the latest exchange of e-mails that I have had with Champion Petfoods regarding Orijen 6-Fish. Read from the bottom up to get the context. This food is good but could be better. Time will tell if my efforts have any effect but no matter what I will never stop trying.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for the feedback! I want you to know that I have passed your comments on to our Research & Development team. While things may not change right away it’s thought provoking to be challenged on an issue, and that’s how change is brought about.

Warm Regards,

Hi Bonnie,

While I have the greatest of respect for Champion Petfoods, there is one more change that would really put your company at the head of the pack. Here is another article on the problem of farmed salmon http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/13/salmon-confidential.aspx?e_cid=20130413_DNL_art_1&utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20130413 .

This problem will not go away and appears to be getting worse. Just as Champion Petfoods has wonderfully defied the conventional wisdom in the past, it is my hope that your company will continue to set the standards for the pet food industry and ban all use of farmed fish and make the statement on the bag of Orijen 6-Fish that I have in front of me completely true:

“ORIJEN 6 FISH IS MADE WITH HIGH INCLUSIONS OF FRESHWATER AND SALTWATER FISH THAT ARE SUSTAINABLY CAUGHT WITHIN OUR REGION AND DELIVERED FRESH AND PRESERVATIVE-FREE EACH DAY”

Alternatives include using frozen wild caught salmon in the off season (as I have previously suggested), eliminating salmon from the formula or only using salmon in the form of salmon meal.

If you eliminated the farmed salmon and decreased the amount of omega-6 so that it was ½ or less the amount of omega-3 then Orijen would represent the kibble formula closest to the ancestral diet of the Newfoundland dog, the breed for which I have dedicated my life.

Newfondly,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Nice to hear from you!

No meat, just more fish! The salmon content remains the same, wild caught when in season and fresh, farmed salmon when out of season. The rest of our fish is all Wild caught.

The bag sizes have changed to be consistent with our ACANA line, most retailers prefer the new bag style for merchandising and space issues. They won’t be changing again, I think we’ve got it all set now. J

Hi again Bonnie,

Just saw a copy of the brochure on the latest re-formulation of Orijen 6-Fish and was relieved to see that meat was not added to the formula. Did however notice that the calorie count and bag size have been reduced.

The brochure emphasizes that the fish is “wild caught”. In previous e-mail communication you admitted that farmed salmon is used as well. The phrase “Our Salmon, Herring and Flounder are caught off North Vancouver Island…” particularly caught my attention.

Knowing how wonderfully honest Champion Pet Foods is, can I conclude that your company has now ceased the practice of using farmed salmon in the Orijen products?

Newfondly,

Peter

Hi Bonnie,

Just heard a rumour that the formula for Orijen 6-Fish is changing and meat will be added. This sounds extremely outrageous to me but I thought I should check with you to be sure.

Please let me know one way or the other.

Thanks,

Newfondly,

Peter

Gosh if it was a American Company, they would probably have some off shore customer support 3rd party center say "Thank you for your comments" then never be heard from again. I am impressed with Champion Pet Foods.

Love those "EH"s Never forget the first time I was in Canada. It was Vancover BC, and heard that a lot from the group I met.

No offense taken. I am just getting sick and tired of these big corporations taking over good products, then cheaping them telling us "improved" and trying to capitalize on a respected brand. Then when you complain you get some canned answer if any at all.

:eek:fftopic:
