Almost 10 years ago my friend Geoffrey tricked me into stopping at someones home so he could use the bathroom. He asked if I wanted to come in and look at this womans dogs. Well of course I did! Much to my surprise her house was filled with dogs! Bernese Mountain Dogs to be exact. Little did I know that this woman was (is) a leading breeder/authority on Berners. After introductions she asked if I would like to see puppies! Of course I did!! She handed me a puppy out of a litter of about 8 or 9. These pups were only 2 weeks old. I was so excited! My friend Geoffrey's Berner came from this kennel. My family were made legal guardians of Geoffrey's dog because we loved him so much...When she handed the pup to me she said " this one is yours". No words~just tears...

When the time came to go and pick up our new pup my family and I had researched and researched this breed. We purchased everything needed for a new pup in the home...

Arriving at the kennel, which was about a 5 hour drive fueled by excitement alone, we were invited in to the puppy room. The breeder, Eileen, said that we now had the option of another pup to choose from. Soon after this litter was born Eileen recognized her next champion! He had all the qualities to become her top dog!! Berners are usually born with blue eyes which turn brown after a couple weeks. sometimes the blue color will remain in one or both eyes and while it has no bearing on their vision it is a disqualification in the show ring...When Eileen noticed that her next champions eye remained blue she made him available to us. But how will we choose who comes home with us? Couldn't take both....

We sat on the floor in the puppy room waiting anxiously to meet our new family member. Eileen let both out to visit with us and immediately it was clear who would come home. The first puppy went and sat in a corner with no apparent interest in the 4 strangers on the floor. The pup who would have been Eileens champion came bounding, tail wagging, jumping from lap to lap as if saying " Come on!! Let's go!! I've been waiting for ya!!! Let's go home!!!!" Yep he made the choice for us...

Odin gave his eye so that he would receive knowledge which would benefit the people. Jara (the rune) says " That which you put your effort to will yield good result. Odin Jara would be his name!!

He was and is the most remarkable Dog ever in our Life!

For the first time last night he wandered far away from the house. He never wanted to be away from his family so this was highly unusual. After about 15 minutes of searching he was found laying in our field. Again this morning he did the same...

On our first meeting it was Odin Jara telling us he made the choice to come home with us. Today Odin Jara told us it was time for him to leave...

There is a deep and profound sadness in our home today...
