No idea

My lulu belle can’t close her mouth or chew. Went to the vet and they have no idea what is wrong with her. She can’t chew or close her mouth. I have to make her food mush so she can lick it. If she can’t eat they will have to do a feeding tube. She is 4 and is healthy. Any ideas?

Still the same this morning. She doesn’t seem to be in pain. Just can’t close her mouth so everything just falls out.

I saw a vet program the other day where a dog had a small bone or stick lodged in his mouth which prevented him from closing, eating, etc. If the vet saw nothing, then this is probably not the problem, but is worth a second opinion.

It could be that her jaw is out of alignment, too. Xrays may be necessary.

Dogs rarely get tetanus (lock jaw) but you may find this article interesting. I can be caused by foxtails. https://thebark.com/content/tetanus-not-just-bites-and-rusty-nails

I googled and found something called trigeminal neuritis. It’s rare, but sounds like what you describe. It said it usually goes away in 2-4 weeks. Maybe something to ask about?

How terrible, and yes my first thoughts went to something stuck inside the mouth, but x-rays sounds like it would be the next step. Praying you find your answers!!!! (and fast)

It sounds like it might be masticatory myositis, an autoimmune condition that happens rapidly and cause pain in opening or closing of the mouth due to inflammation in the muscles of the jaw. I remember some years ago there was a Newf that had it with a sudden onset and it was treated with pain meds and anti-inflammatories but took some time to resolve. You might mention this as a possibility to your vet since it seems to affect large breed dogs more frequently than small ones.

That is what they are 5inking it is. She has been going for laser treatments to see if it helps or not. Nothing they can do for it. I hope that is it and it goes away fast as she is so pathetic. She is a counter surfer and the garbage can in the kitchen she thinks is her toy box. Now she can’t grab anything and it is frustrating her. She also can’t drink out of the Auto water jug, she needs a 5 gallon bucket so she can stick her whole head into to drink. I feel so bad for her.

How are you managing to get food in her?
I grind up her dog food in a blender with water and yogurt. Today I got the right consistency so it wasn’t so messy. I have to hold the bowl for her to eat so she can get it in her mouth. But no chewing, just swallowing.

So new twist to this. Today I noticed her eyes are drooping and runny. She had another laser treatment today so the vet came in to check on her. He tapped on both her eyebrow areas and she didn’t blink shut. So now I have to make sure her eyes aren’t drying out and if this doesn’t clear up she will need to see a neurologist and get an mri. Anyone have any clues?

Ask for an xray of her TMJ's.... it the part that is like a little ball and joint socket in the jaw... if they are out of alignment, they cannot close their mouth properly. It can happen during play or just if the hit it hard
