I live in Seattle, and it does seem to have a lot of dogs. It is kind of strange to be downtown and see all these dogs walking by...and not just pocket dogs either! I rarely see a newf, tho.
The weather is great for newfs! It rarely gets very hot, and they don't much mind the rain. And a sunny day up here is...stunning...the mountains and all the trees...it is beautiful. When the weather is good, there is no place like it. I lived in NC for 6 years, too, and Florida for awhile, but I love the northwest. And I like being close to Seattle because there is a lot to see and do there. There are lots of places to walk your dog on-leash....miles of walking paths, and many parks. Dogs are often not allowed on the playground part, though, so watch for signs.
The whole area has great dog parks...with water. There are Marymoor, Magnuson, Luther Burbank, Howarth, and Edmonds, and then there are lots without water...but I don't often visit those! I haven't seen a lot of unpleasant dog park incidents, either. People seem to be pretty much aware of their dogs, and trouble is usually squelched quickly. If you do visit a dog park, be sure to park in a designated parking space...they do look for improperly parked cars. One thing you want to watch for is that dogs are NOT welcome on any Seattle (not sure about Redmond specifically) beaches...in some places, not even on the sand. And there is a steep off-leash fine...$250. They are strict about licenses, too...I actually had animal control come to my door and ask if i had pets and if they were licensed...they were. And they apparently ask at the parks, too...I heard on the radio. It's not a vendetta against pet owners...animal control just has a very low budget and was almost shut down completely last year due to lack of funds.
There are dog-friendly places and events. One night at 9:45 pm I was able to get a hotel room that night for us and my dog with one phone call. They can ride on the ferries...and walk out on deck, though they can't go in the cabin. There are dog events like fundraising walks, shows, dock dogs, etc. I think I just missed attending an event with Frisbee dogs. :darn: There are a number of petstores, both big box and small independents. You can take dogs down to the Ivar's restaurant (the outdoor one) on the Seattle waterfront and sit outside with the seagulls. Perhaps not the best plan if your dog has a high prey drive.
Sometimes the fast food drivethroughs give out dog biscuits if they see a dog in your car.
As far as commuting...I don't know a lot about specific routes, but if you have the option to take Microsoft connect or the bus...do it. The commutes here are terrible. Sorry, but they just are. Live as close as you can afford to where you work. My husband takes the bus every Friday because the commute home (from Lynnwood to West Seattle) that day is soooo long and slow. We would live closer, but it is very expensive and farther from church and my family.
I am not a member of the newf club, but they have a Green Lake walk every year, and a Christmas tree pull and some other stuff. They seem to only do a limited bit of water training. In fact, I have not been able to find a place that does do water training. The newf people I talked to at the show pretty much recommended doing it myself with Judi Adler's book.
Now I have written you a book! Oh well. I hope it helps!
