I am only guessing that the Newf got spooked at the Tour today due to the horns, loud crowds, sirens and helicopters etc... The picture shows the guy with a leash. I wonder if the newf got out of the collar after being spooked. I feel so bad for the family and the Newf. I think that the cyclist involved with the crash got up and moved forward with the race.

One time my Noche got spooked by a fake show down (gun battle) at a Fourth of July Parade.. She took off like a bat out of hell with me trailing behind her on leash. I thought my arm was going to come out of the socket. I didn't think that there was going to be any way of stopping her. Pretty scary for her.

I know he's really upset but he looks like he's terrorizing that poor little girl.

He says people shouldn't be there with a dog that size off lead - I would wager even a 25 lb dog could have caused an accident if it ran into the road during a race.

A shame in any case.

I have to admit that I've done some bicycling in my time, but not competitively. Having said that, I don't blame the guy for being mad at the OWNERS of the dog. I don't consider it the dog's fault...

" ... which some riders later compared to "a pony" ... "

Google news search, word "Newfoundland" not yet associated with this incident. Just large black dog.

Newf in picture not a huge Newf ... not stray, owners right there, but loose or slipped collar at some point to run in street.

Good idea to socialize dogs off leash to multi-use trails, teach them to move to side when bicycles / scooters / strollers etc approach. Also to get dog used to all types of sounds. And then hold on tight to leash and harness when in a situation like this. Boy does that rider look angry, good thing he was being restrained.

I would be mad too if a dog of that size rushed me on a bicycle. By breed it is not that big but still a big dog. Hopefully the owner is not sued later on. It is very important to take proper precautions with our dogs. Too many times I see collars that are way too loose.

Talk about my pet peeve. I have so many customers, I'd say 99%, who have their collars too loose. So loose they slip right over the head and they do it on purpose. I tell them a loose collar is like not having a collar. I've talked till I'm blue in the face and just give up. Now I always give the customer their collar and leash to let them put it on the dog. That way if the dog slips the collar going out the door it is NOT my fault. If I'd put ont he collar it 'could' be my fault.

Loose collars and retractable leashes. Both can be deadly.

Sulley is really good with pretty well anywhere we go, and when he gets scared his reaction is normally to come to me, but this is exactly why I put a martingale collar on him when we go out to stuff like this, they are so much harder to slip out of. He has a nice big 3'' fancy one from wiggles, wags and whiskers that looks slick and can tighten up fairly easily. I am not comfortable leaving a tight collar on him when he is alone, but when we are in situations like that it is a must.

As far as everything I've read, the Newf slipped its collar. (You can also see the collar in the gentleman's hand in that first pic) Yes, they obviously should have had it on more tightly, but I know when a Newf gets spooked, like my Mila often does, even a pretty tight collar can pose a problem if you're not expecting a reaction like that. But it should have been tighter. That being said, what kind of a jerkwad stands there hollering at a set of parents with what appears to be an 8 year old little girl there? Just because of that, I don't feel sorry for this guy in the slightest. Real men don't scare little girls, even in the heat of emotion. 'Nuff said.

The way the cyclist words it, it sounds like that if it weren't for his manager, he would have hit one of the parents. Nice. Guy sounds like a Grade A jerkwad.

The article should have said "carelessness of a dogs owner"..I can't blame the rider either.....you train for years and years and someone else's carelessness could have ended all your hard work....I would have went off too...
Pretty sure the dog wasn't sitting there calm then just suddenly got out of his collar without a struggle and bolted...
When Shadoe was about 5 mo we were jumped on twice by a dog on a flexi....owner couldn't retract in time...used every curse word in my repertoire...and some I made up

JMHO, but in my experience most Frenchmen are a**'es. I read all of the FB Posts in the article. 99% were riders. All siding with the rider. Sorry I say Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! It was an accident. Stuff happens, get over it, and get a life. Glad he did not get hurt, but threatening a parent in front of there child, sorry, I don't feel for you. Take your nose out of the air, and deal with it. Show some class........

I have to agree with Kristen and Ted. I don't feel sorry for him in the slightest after yelling and having to be restrained, and that little girl looks scared. I don't think I would've been standing there so calmly while he was yelling at me. Stuff happens. Get back on your bike and pedal, little man. Is the country supposed to shut down because they're riding their bikes around?

Ummmm, simmer down there, please. Most Frenchmen? Do you know most? Sorry, I can't abide by that much generalization. In this case, serious bikers are generally likely to side with the rider - French or not French, it does not matter.

Does anyone know the nationality of the family with the dog? Being where they were fairly far outside of Toulouse there's a fair chance that they, too, are French.

The rider who threatened the family in front of the child was a jerk, who happened to be French. :)

The cyclist later apologized for over reacting.... Thus after he figured out he didn't brake anything...

I am also an avid cyclist and I don't believe that it was the dogs fault. It was the negligent owners for sure. I also feel terrible for the little girl having to experience the angry cyclist. I can only hope she didn't understand a word he was saying.

We are very fortunate where I live and we have a bike trail that is used by cyclist, runners etc. I have no problem yelling at someone to get their dog on a leash or get off the trail if no leash is visible. Not just on the bike trail but on the road there are are all kinds of obsticles out there for cyclist (ie rabbits, squirrels, coyotes, turkeys and deer) to contend with let alone a dog off leash because of an idiot owner. And don't even get me going on riding on the road and cars..... That is a whole other can of worms.
