Never had one before.. "HOT SPOT"

So a few days ago I noticed a really ugly red, bald spot on one of my dogs legs. She is licking it like crazy, and after looking up info on Hot Spots I'm pretty sure thats what it is. So my question is, can this be treated at home? I have cut the hair short tried to clean and keep it dry. I have searched for other info before asking, but did not really see much, I might not know how to search very well. Thanks

Leave it open to air so it can dry out. You should see results in just a day or two if you use Gold Bond on it....not gone, but definitely drying up...It will form a scab like crust as it heals.
If she is continuing to lick/bother it you may have to use a cone of shame (also known as an elizabethan collar) on her until it is healed up...

Some Neosporin may help if you catch it soon enough. Your doing all the right things,
I know what a nightmare they can be. My lab used to get some real dandies and Chloe has had a few.

we are at the crusty stage now but its very itchy! We are spraying daktarin on it too which seems to stop the itch is anti-fungal and ant- bacterial. I also have to cover it when I am not there to supervise as even with his softy collar he is doing so damage at night when it seems most itchy :( he now wears one of my cardigans around his waist and over the hot spot when we are not there which is helping as the elizabethan collar is just too stressful :( hope you get it cleared up soon :) x

yep, it's that time of year for sure. My Gojie is the king of hot spots in this house.
He's got one on his tail right now. I have used Gold Bond Powder too but I've found I have much better success with *Blue Powder*. It's a mixture of Gentian Violet, Witch Hazel and Boric Acid Powder.
There's absolutely nothing BLUE about it so I have no clue where the name came from. It's purple (haha) and on a Landseer it can be quite attractive. It works though and that's all that matters. Right now Gojie has a purple spot and it's healing nicely.

I have betagen on hand at all times. You do need a script from a vet, but it is really cheap and works instantly. Half Listerine half water works also.

Agh - found a hot spot on BEN last night. The first of my 3 Newfies to ever get one, and I've had Newfies since 1995! I am so sad. He has been licking the spot where he dripped blood from the bite on his nose last week. I figured he just could smell the blood, and though I washed the area, it was attracting his attention. But no, upon closer inspection we had a nice, ripe hot spot. :(

I've clipped it close and rinsed it so far. I've been reading all the advice here (thanks!) and if it doesn't work I will hie him to the vet's! I'll keep you all posted.....

Hot spots. We've struggled with them with Newfs and our 1 berner for over 30 years, since we got into the breed. I haven't found a fail proof method yet, and believe me, I've tried them all.

I am on my 6th week of something that has worked VERY, very well for us. But I want to use it for a year before recommending it; but not only has it stopped hot spots, he isn't getting ear infections, and things we are triggered for at this time of year.

It Can't be a miracle cure; so I reserve judgement. But I'm the most hopeful heading into this spring. Will let you know 5 months from now if the promise still holds!

Nothing can be more exasperating than a dog filled with allergies and you have no idea how to control them all............

Bojie would get hotspots constantly as he has A TON of coat- He hasn't gotten one in a few years because first, I ALWAYS make sure he is completely dry to the skin after baths or swimming by hand drying him with a high velocity dryer (not getting fully dry was our biggest reason for them) that takes a while, but it's worth it. Second, during baths, I bathe him with medicated shampoo after the normal shampoo. http://www.kvsupply.com/KVVet/produ...alse&mscssid=C73E48B92DCF44B8B9DA905A82EFB538
It also comes in a spray which I use when he needs it. This change in grooming has helped him tremendously.

well guys, here is the product in my experience...Nu stock......It is a miricle... I have had instances where I have put it on ONCE and it is dried up the next day... I have even put in on thru the hair in cases where it was a dog about to show, and it has worked.. of course would recommend shaving,,and some are more stubborn than others..you can google it..and find out where to buy it. My vet has it but alot dont.. Oh, and use gloves to put it on...or your hands will smell for a while...kind of like sulpher.

We got another one. this one is huge, her hair is licked into clumps so when I tried to cut it back it hurt her. We are going to the vet tomorrow. The first one healed good, this one is just 3xs bigger. dang it.

Jorges has gone now, we used chlorhexidine pink spray 3 times per day, the area was shaved - we then used daktaran foot spray which is anti fungal and anti bacterial- this I think stopped it itching which helped him leave the spot alone :) we also put a comfy collar on Jorge and an old cardigan around his waist to stop him getting at it. Since its gone I am blasting him twice per week to ensure I get rid of any old fur/dry skin it also helps me to see right down to the skin to check he has no further sopts developing, good luck it was my first hot spot and I hope my last! x hugs to the bears suffering from one xx

ETA he also had antibiotics from the vet for 5 days .

Wendy and Levi (NewfMom123) put me on to the best stuff, Betagen, I get it online from petmeds.com since my vet here doesn't stock it. Petmeds will call your vet for the prescription. It will dry a hotspot up in 24hrs but also relieves any itching so they leave it alone as well. I also used it on Cole when his neutering incision was driving him crazy.

I just ordered some, overnight air. Is it safe if Ben licks it?

Won't hurt them to lick it...mine have...You don't use it every day. Read the instructions. If it is seperated when you get it, stir it up..(If you got the jar)
