Moose Update from Neurologist Visit

Much better outlook from this neurologist today. The neuro test had the same consistent results as Thursday's exam: Loss of feeling and function in the hind end, over-reaction to some stimuli and not reacting to pain in his back knees and feet...still has severe hip dysplasia but it's worse in the right hip.

What was different with this neurologist is he walked us through the x rays and told us the top fusion is causing the nerve damage, but isn't causing pain (you can push and massage around there and Moose doesn't shy away from it). The pain he's feeling comes from his lower back, where his hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy is. He thinks the pain is "moderate discomfort" for now and that we shouldn't make any rash decisions. He said, "from my short time with Moose, he doesn't seem to be in complete misery like the other vet thinks. He walks weird, and he always will, and he WILL get worse...but for now I think we can manage him and let him tell us when it's his time".

For now he'll start Rimadyl and we can add in other pain meds if he needs. We'll go for as many walks as he can handle since it's good exercise for his weak muscles that need to be built back up. We'll keep up the water and laser therapy and try acupuncture, essential oils, and heat and hand massages. Thank you, THANK YOU for all the love and support you've sent our way. Definitely feeling it. So blessed to have all of you and especially blessed to have Kev who's been here for me, letting me cry, and letting me drop hundreds of dollars just to make sure my boy is okay. :)

yay for better news! It has got to be good knowing he hasn't been in as much pain as you were lead to believe =-)

Aww thanks all. Definitely a relief. I knew there's no "fixing" him or even making him better per say...but I'm glad he only thinks it's moderately uncomfortable.

One more Moose thing and then I swear I'll shut up for now. The vet said his eyes were beautiful and stunning because Moose has a ring of silver around his pupils he's never noticed before. I'd like to think it was his soul shining through :) Any other newf owners have this silver ring around the pupil? Chiweenie doesn't have it, I checked.

That's very good news! One thing that might help with the discomfort of Moose's hip dysplasia is Adequen injections. Our Murphy had them done and they helped him tremendously. To my understanding the injections help the body produce more if the fluid between the hip joint and socket to create more of a cushion. It helped manage Murphy's pain along with Rimadyl and Tramadol. This and walking to build up his atrophied muscles gave us an extra two years with our boy as he wasn't a good candidate for hip surgery.

I am very happy you have some better news and I wish you many more happy days with your boy :hugs:

He had half my bagel for breakfast. I think he'll be very spoiled for the rest of his life. Not to the point of getting fat...but his time, no matter how short or long is very precious to me. :)

Wow great news!

One of the best pieces of advice I read on here years ago was that dogs don't read x-rays or understand prognoses - so Moose may well beat the odds and, with your love and help, be around for a lot longer than even the neurologist may think.

Has anyone shown you about chakras and pendulums? Zuzu's PT showed it to me today, and she showed me how to use my own energy to stimulate Zuzu's. Weird and I'm not sure I bought it completely but I guess it can't hurt along with the other massage we do...

That's great Aubrey! I'm so glad you got a good update and that he's hopefully not as uncomfortable as the other vet thought. I'm sure he'll be even better with the meds. Don't be afraid to ask about other pain meds if the Rimadyl causes side effects. Maggie couldn't tolerate that at all (stomach issues) but has been doing great on Metacam.

On another note, I'm happy that your husband has been there for you. Maybe Mr. Moose's purpose in life is to bring you guys closer together after the problems you've had.

Glad to hear the improved prognosis! How about cold laser therapy. Not everyone does it but I have heard good reports on those dogs (and people) that have been treated with it.

This is so encouraging! Clearly, you still have a challenge ahead but this sounds much more manageable. Don't feel like you're bothering us with your posts.. keep the updates coming. I know for me, sometimes it just helps to put something in writing to help bring perspective when dealing with our pet's issues.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things.

My second newfie, Annie, have severe hip dysplasia, a total hip replacement, OCD in both shoulders. Problems in three corners. With moderate exercise, good food and holistic vet practices, she lived until one month shy of 13 yo. We believe she had a stroke.

My third newfie, Dexter, had hip dysplasia. Starting in 2006, I had him in underwater treadmill to maintain muscles, etc. He lived until over 12 1/2 yo. His heart gave out.

It certainly can be done and you can get them to a ripe age. Best of luck to you, and keep up the good work!

PS. Also, I do not vaccinate them, except initially. From there on, I titer them, which I think helps immensely also. JMVHO!

I am so glad you were able to go to a Specialist for him.....And I am glad that the news is much more promising. there are a few of us who have lived with less then perfect newfies for a long time. They might not be perfect, but the are still perfectly lovely.
Thinking of you guys...Moose is lucky to have someone who loves him so much and is able to care for him  :hugs: to you both

Adequan did wonders for our Whybu. He was a totally differant dog once we started it. He got at least a year of extra play due to the injections. We did them at home.

Amen. He told me his secret today...I'd called him first thing bawling about Moose. Before I could get ahold of my breeder (I was still driving home from our appointment) he'd messaged her and begged her for another pup for me. Yes. My newf-hair-hating, drool-cursing, "you're big and in the way" saying husband GETS how much Moose means to me and doesn't want me to be without one. I'm speechless. I'm sure she would have done something anyway, but it speaks volumes about him that he'd go out of his way to do that, especially since he's had a "one newf household" rule and now we're hoping this next little boy will overlap with Moo and Moo can help raise it.

I'll ask if the rehab center does it when we go next. I didn't ask if it was hot or cold...
